TV-Series
Description
Master Li, whose full name is Li Jian-Qiang, is the leader of the Taiwanese crime syndicate Zheng Dao Hui and the biological father of Xiang Ying, the main protagonist of Angel Heart. For much of the story, his true role within the organization is obscured by his twin brother, Li Qian-De, who acted as the public face of the syndicate while Li Jian-Qiang raised his family away from the underworld. Only after Qian-De is assassinated does Li Jian-Qiang fully assume the duties of leading Zheng Dao Hui. His personal tragedy begins years earlier when his wife and young daughter are involved in a car accident; his wife dies, and his daughter, Xiang Ying, is believed to have perished as well. In truth, she survives but is taken by the organization and raised as an assassin under the codename Glass Heart, a fact that Li Jian-Qiang discovers only later. This revelation fuels a deep, enduring guilt and self-condemnation: he cannot forgive himself for the suffering his daughter endured under his own syndicate, and he believes he is unworthy of raising her. Despite his powerful position, his primary motivation is to protect Xiang Ying from further harm, even at the cost of never reuniting with her. He entrusts her care to Ryo Saeba, understanding that she can have a healthier life away from the criminal world. He is also the one who gives her the affectionate nickname Ah-Xiang, which he used when she was very young. In the story, Master Li serves as a supporting figure who influences key events from the shadows, often acting through his trusted aide, Grand Chamberlain Chen. His relationships are defined by his love for his daughter and his alliance with Ryo, whom he respects enough to ask for help. Over the course of the series, Li Jian-Qiang demonstrates a capacity for decisive action, such as ordering the liquidation of a lieutenant who endangered Xiang Ying, and he shows a quiet, paternal devotion even from a distance. His notable abilities include his authority over a vast criminal network and the strategic acumen to manage that power while maintaining a semblance of a normal family life. Ultimately, his character arc revolves around letting go of his daughter for her own good, a painful but selfless decision that underscores his role as a tragic father figure.
