Description
Edward Newgate, better known by his epithet Whitebeard, is a legendary figure from the manga and anime One Piece. As the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, he was one of the "Four Emperors" who ruled the second half of the Grand Line known as the New World. Before his death, he was widely celebrated as the "Strongest Man in the World," a title earned through his immense power and his unique ability to contend on equal footing with the former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

Background
Edward Newgate was born on April 6th in the impoverished, non-World Government-affiliated island of Sphinx in the Grand Line. He grew up as an orphan in a war-torn land that was too poor to pay the Heavenly Tribute to the World Government, forcing him to become a pirate at a very young age to support his home village. In his early days at sea, he was a member of other crews before joining the infamous and chaotic Rocks Pirates, serving alongside future Emperors like Big Mom and Kaidou. Following the Rocks Pirates' dissolution after the God Valley Incident, Newgate formed his own crew, took on the nickname Whitebeard, and eventually rose to become one of the Four Emperors.

Despite his fearsome reputation, Whitebeard's primary motivation was never treasure, power, or the title of Pirate King. His one true dream was to have a family. Having suffered a lonely childhood without parents, he sought to create a place of belonging on the open sea. This desire manifested in his crew, which he treated not as a military unit but as a surrogate family, calling his subordinates his "sons" and expecting to be called "Papa" or "Old Man" in return.

Personality and Motivations
Whitebeard possessed a paradoxical nature: he was both terrifyingly powerful and deeply compassionate. He had a grand, jovial personality expressed through his unique laugh, "Gurararara," and a love for expensive sake, which he drank constantly despite the protests of his nurses who reminded him of his failing health. While he often appeared overconfident and stubborn, ignoring advice and issuing commands that seemed like reckless bravado, this was usually a cover for deep strategic thinking. For instance, he claimed he ordered Ace to hunt down the traitor Blackbeard to save face, but in truth, he had tried to stop Ace from going because he had a bad feeling about the mission.

Whitebeard followed a strict moral code that emphasized honor and loyalty above all else. He had a zero-tolerance policy for a crewmate killing another, believing that such an act violated the sanctity of the family. He was fiercely protective of his "children," willing to go to war against the entire World Government to save a single one. He also believed that a child should not be held responsible for the crimes of their parents, a conviction best exemplified by his refusal to judge Portgas D. Ace for being the son of Gol D. Roger. Despite his frightening exterior, he was a humanitarian at heart. He used his influence as an Emperor for good, liberating Fish-Man Island from slavery and human trafficking by claiming it as his territory, and anonymously sending vast sums of his treasure to support his war-torn homeland of Sphinx.

Role in the Story and Development
Whitebeard serves as the central figure of the "Summit War of Marineford" arc. His role is to act as the last bastion of the previous era, a living legend bridging the gap between Roger's time and the "New Age." When his adopted son, Ace, is captured by the Marines and sentenced to execution, Whitebeard mobilizes his entire fleet—comprising 16 division commanders and 43 allied New World crews—to launch a devastating assault on Marine Headquarters.

His character development is largely a study in stoic decline and dignified sacrifice. By the time of the story, Whitebeard is 72 years old and gravely ill, requiring constant medical care and life support. Yet, he refuses to die in a hospital bed. His journey to Marineford is a calculated suicide mission to save his family. During the battle, he suffers a critical betrayal from his subordinate Squard, and his health deteriorates rapidly. However, he continues fighting, demonstrating that his will is far stronger than his failing body. Ultimately, he fails to save Ace, who dies protecting his brother Luffy. In a final act of defiance, Whitebeard acknowledges the new generation, confirms the existence of the legendary treasure One Piece to the world, and dies standing on his feet with his back unsullied by retreat wounds—a symbol of his legendary career of never fleeing from a fight.

Key Relationships
Gol D. Roger: Whitebeard shared a friendly rivalry with the Pirate King. They clashed many times and respected each other immensely. Roger even visited Whitebeard to tell him the secrets of the world before his execution, revealing the meaning of the "Will of D.".
Portgas D. Ace: Whitebeard took the troubled son of Roger under his wing. Despite Ace's countless assassination attempts, Whitebeard saw him as a son and groomed him to be a future leader, making him the 2nd division commander. Their bond was so strong that Ace refused to let anyone speak ill of Whitebeard, sparking the conflict that led to the Marineford War.
Marco the Phoenix: As the 1st division commander, Marco functioned as Whitebeard's right-hand man. He was the most trusted member of the crew and was fiercely protective of the captain.
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard): Whitebeard allowed a young, orphaned Teach to join his crew, a decision he later regretted. When Teach murdered a crewmate to steal a Devil Fruit, Whitebeard broke his own code by trying to let him escape rather than send Ace to hunt him, sensing the danger Teach posed.
Shanks: As a fellow Emperor, Shanks tried to warn Whitebeard to recall Ace from hunting Blackbeard, but Whitebeard refused. However, their clash was one of mutual respect between former rivals.

Notable Abilities
Whitebeard is known as the "Strongest Man in the World" due to his possession of the Gura Gura no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit considered the most powerful of its class. This fruit allows him to create devastating shockwaves and tremors by literally punching the air. He can generate earthquakes that sink islands, create tsunamis by tilting the sea, and even crack the very atmosphere.

He wielded a massive bisento classified as a Supreme Grade Blade (Saijo O Wazamono) named Murakumogiri. In combat, Whitebeard was a master of all three forms of Haki. His Haki was so potent that when he clashed with Shanks, the mere force of their wills split the sky. Even in his old, sickly state, he possessed enough Haki to mortally wound the Marine Admiral Akainu, proving that his title was not mere legend. At the time of his death, he held an active bounty of 5,046,000,000 berries, the highest of any living pirate at that time, reflecting the immense threat he posed to the World Government.
