Description
Nicol Amalfi is a young Coordinator and an elite pilot serving ZAFT during the First Alliance-PLANT War. Born on March 1, Cosmic Era 57, he is the son of Yuri Amalfi, a member of the PLANT Supreme Council. Despite his privileged background, Nicol is not a zealous soldier. He is driven by a sense of duty and a desire to protect the PLANTs, motivations that stem from the trauma of the Bloody Valentine incident, which compelled him to voluntarily enlist and graduate third in his class from the ZAFT military academy.

Nicol is characterized by his gentle, kind, and compassionate nature, a stark contrast to his more aggressive teammates Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman. He carries himself with a dignified demeanor and is the most open-hearted and pleasant member of the Le Creuset team. His sentimental disposition makes him a reluctant fighter; he feels deep sympathy for the casualties of war and is uncomfortable with unnecessary violence, traits that lead his more combative peers to dismiss him as a weakling or a coward. Outside of combat, Nicol is a talented pianist, a hobby that represents his innocence and his longing for peace.

As the pilot of the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, Nicol participates in the ZAFT raid on the neutral colony Heliopolis, where he captures his mobile suit and adapts its operating system. He later becomes a skilled operator of the Blitz Gundam, effectively utilizing its unique Mirage Colloid stealth system for reconnaissance and surprise attacks. His role in the story is primarily as a close friend and confidant of Athrun Zala, whom he admires like a brother. Nicol often serves as a calming, reasoned presence within the team, offering compassion that balances Athrun’s more conflicted and serious outlook.

Nicol’s most significant development comes through his death. During a battle near Orb, he shields Athrun from a critical attack, but his Blitz Gundam is destroyed by Kira Yamato in the Strike Gundam. His sacrifice is a profound turning point in the narrative. It fuels Athrun’s desire for revenge and deepens his disillusionment with the war, marking a shift from a clear-cut mission to a more personal and tragic conflict. Nicol’s demise underscores the human cost of the conflict and the loss of those who seek peace even while fighting, a loss that haunts his surviving comrades and shapes the emotional trajectory of the story.
