Movie
Description
The General of Darkness serves as the supreme military commander of the Mycenae Empire, an ancient civilization that emerges to conquer the surface world following the defeat of Dr. Hell. He is a towering and physically overwhelming giant, clad in dark blue or black armor of Roman-inspired design, complete with a long red cape and a distinctive helmet adorned with three spikes. His most unusual feature is that his true face, appearing as a bearded old man, is located not on his head but on his chest. This imposing appearance reflects his nature as an unstoppable force on the battlefield.
As a character, the General of Darkness embodies absolute authority and unwavering loyalty. He serves directly under the Emperor of Darkness, having been his right hand since before the empire's founding, and he never questions the Emperor's orders, using force to demonstrate that the imperial rule is absolute. He commands the empire's seven armies with an iron fist, and those who fail him are punished. However, he is not a one-dimensional tyrant; he has been shown to care about his underlings and wishes to avenge their deaths when they fall in battle. He adheres to a strict code of honor, preferring to face threats head-on in direct combat and disdaining underhanded tactics or unnecessary sacrifice, which ironically mirrors the loyalty and directness of his primary enemy, pilot Tetsuya Tsurugi.
In the narrative, the General of Darkness acts as the driving antagonistic force. After being forced underground for centuries, he leads the Mycenaean resurgence by launching devastating, coordinated attacks on major world cities. He commands a hierarchy of seven subordinate generals, including figures like Archduke Gorgon and General Juuma, who deploy the empire's Warrior Beasts to crush all resistance. His primary goal is the total conquest of the surface, and the main obstacles to this plan are the Mazinger robots, particularly the newly arrived Great Mazinger, which he sees as a threat to be eliminated. He is a direct foil to Tetsuya Tsurugi, the pilot of Great Mazinger; while both are profoundly loyal to their own commanders and causes, the General fights for the glory of his ancient empire and mourns his fallen soldiers, whereas Tetsuya is more willing to use unconventional tactics.
The General's character arc follows a traditional path of the arrogant conqueror brought low by his own code. After numerous failed attempts by his subordinates to destroy Great Mazinger, he deems them worthless and takes to the field himself. Despite having the power to destroy the Science Fortress Laboratory, he chooses instead to challenge Great Mazinger to a one-on-one duel. He fights with overwhelming strength, initially appearing to win the grueling battle. However, he lets his guard down, an act of overconfidence or perhaps respect for the duel, and is fatally struck down by his enemy. He meets his end without regret, accepting defeat after a long and exhausting fight. His death is a significant blow to the Mycenae Empire, leading to his eventual replacement by another powerful antagonist, the Great Marshall of Hell.
The General of Darkness possesses immense combat abilities that make him a formidable antagonist. His physical strength is overwhelming, allowing him to wield a gigantic sword with a single hand, a blade capable of cleaving through enemies and even landscapes like Mount Fuji. For ranged combat, he can shoot powerful energy beams from his eyes. His defensive capabilities are equally impressive; he can withstand multiple direct attacks from Great Mazinger, including the Mazinger Blade, and his cape is durable enough to resist intense heat attacks. Despite his raw power, he never relies on cowardice or trickery, always facing his enemies directly in accordance with his warrior ethic.
