Description
Doctor Kenzo Kabuto is a prominent figure in the Mazinger series, appearing as the director of the Science Fortress Laboratory in the 1975 crossover film Great Mazinger tai Getter Robo. He is the son of the renowned scientist Juzo Kabuto and the father of Koji and Shiro Kabuto. Presumed dead for many years following a laboratory accident, Kenzo survived thanks to his father, who rebuilt him as a cyborg after he suffered fatal injuries. Choosing to hide his survival to protect his young sons from the emotional shock of seeing their father as a machine, he went into seclusion.

A brilliant scientist whose intellect rivals that of his father, Kenzo is dedicated to protecting humanity from the threat of the Mycenae Empire. While in hiding, he prepared for this coming conflict by creating the titular super robot, Great Mazinger, as an improvement on the original Mazinger Z, using a new, stronger alloy called Super Alloy New Z. He also took in two orphans, Tetsuya Tsurugi and Jun Hono, training them to become the pilots of Great Mazinger and its support craft, Venus A. As the director of the laboratory, he acts as a commander and mentor to the young pilots. He is a good-natured man who values human life greatly, showing a willingness to sacrifice himself and even his own creations to protect the innocent. He is also depicted as a family man who is susceptible to his son Shiro's requests, which led him to build the small robot Junior for the boy.

Kenzo's relationships are complex due to his long period of hiding. While he is the legal guardian of Tetsuya and Jun, he initially keeps his biological connection to Koji and Shiro a secret from them. His reunion with his sons, particularly the youngest, Shiro, is initially awkward. He has a deep respect and gratitude for his own father, Juzo, both for saving his life and for watching over his family. His mentorship of Tetsuya is strict, focusing heavily on the young man's progress as a pilot, but it is balanced by a deep trust and care for his well-being.

In the main Great Mazinger television series, Kenzo's character arc culminates in a final act of self-sacrifice, crashing the Science Fortress Laboratory into the enemy's stronghold to ensure the survival of the pilots and the success of their mission, ultimately dying in his son Koji's arms. This act defines his character as one who consistently prioritizes the safety of others and the future of humanity above his own existence. In the crossover film Great Mazinger tai Getter Robo, his role is consistent with his depiction in the series as the commander and creator of Great Mazinger, though the specific details of his actions within that particular film are not extensively documented. His notable abilities include genius-level intellect in robotics and engineering, enabling him to design and construct advanced war machines and develop new super-strong alloys.
