Movie
Description
Commander Barendos is a high-ranking officer and military strategist serving the Vegan Empire, dispatched on a critical mission to subjugate Earth and destroy its defending super-robot, Grendizer. His appearance is that of a tall humanoid with light blue skin, a characteristic feature of the Vegan race, and elongated ears. He is typically clad in a form-fitting light blue and black uniform complemented by chest armor with light green accents and a distinctive helmet with long, sweeping horns. His eyes are notable for having yellow sclera and green pupils.

Barendos possesses a personality defined by extreme cruelty and cunning, standing out even among the Vegan forces for his willingness to use psychological warfare. He is a manipulative strategist who prefers to turn an enemy's own strength and bonds against them, forcing friends to fight one another and showing no hesitation in eliminating hostages once they have served their purpose. This behavior stems from a deep-seated arrogance and ambition, as he openly proposes to replace his predecessors, Gandal and Blaki, and lead the Earth invasion himself should his mission prove successful.

In the narrative of the 1976 film UFO Robo Grendizer tai Great Mazinger, Barendos is sent by King Vega to accomplish what previous commanders could not. His primary role is that of the central antagonist, arriving on Earth to capture the hero Koji Kabuto. Through a process of mental conditioning, he extracts information from Koji, learning of the decommissioned Great Mazinger, a super-robot of immense power. Seizing this opportunity, Barendos locates and steals the Great Mazinger from a robot museum with the specific goal of using it as his ultimate weapon against Duke Fleed's Grendizer. This act forces a conflict where the two legendary robots battle each other, a key departure from typical team-up stories. His main relationships are antagonistic; he views the Earth heroes, particularly Koji Kabuto and Duke Fleed, as obstacles to be eliminated, and he holds a contemptuous and threatening attitude toward his Vegan subordinates, Gandal and Blaki.

A notable contrast exists between the film's portrayal of Barendos and his depiction in Go Nagai's manga adaptation. While in the movie he serves as a formidable but ultimately conventional villain, the manga version reveals a far more sadistic history. During the destruction of Duke Fleed's home planet, Barendos is responsible for taking the young princes hostage and, after receiving the weapons he demanded, callously threw them from a great height to their deaths. This past act establishes a deep, personal hatred between Barendos and Duke Fleed, making him a truly despised nemesis.

In terms of abilities, Barendos is not a frontline physical combatant but excels in psychological manipulation and tactical strategy. He demonstrates the capacity to operate advanced Vegan spacecraft and, crucially, is able to pilot the stolen Great Mazinger with considerable skill, utilizing its full arsenal of weapons to overwhelm Grendizer. His primary method of attack involves deception, hostage-taking, and leveraging captured technology. His development throughout the film is minimal, serving more as a powerful obstacle to be overcome than a character who experiences internal change. His arrogance becomes his undoing, as he is ultimately outmaneuvered by the ingenuity of Koji Kabuto, who escapes captivity and exploits a weakness in Great Mazinger that Barendos did not anticipate, leading to the commander's defeat and the recovery of the stolen robot.
