Description
Izumi Marufuji is one of the three main female characters from the visual novel and anime adaptation of Interlude. She is depicted as an office lady working at City Hall. In her professional setting, she is frequently subjected to sexual harassment from her male colleagues, a condition that defines much of her experience in the workplace.
Throughout the narrative, Marufuji serves as a central figure in a storyline that explores the existence of a parallel world. As the protagonist becomes more involved with Marufuji and her two co-workers, Yuki Takase and Kaoruko Minegishi, he learns about a mysterious alternate city where the sun never rises. This other world is inhabited by dangerous monsters, as well as suspicious humans in protective suits who visit from the main reality. Her immediate superior is Ikuo Fuyuki, who eventually reveals that City Hall is a front for a secret initiative known as the Pandora Project, an organization whose purpose is to prevent an invasion from this moon city.
In the visual novel narrative specifically focused on her route, Marufuji and the protagonist receive assistance from a middle-aged man named Sugiura, who is later killed in the main world, presumably by a creature that crossed over from the parallel dimension. The conclusion of her storyline sees Marufuji and the protagonist witness a confrontation where Aya Watsuji fights a massive ghostly entity before departing to another world. The route ends on a personal note with the two characters sharing a kiss on a beach.
The character's role differs significantly between the original visual novel and the three-episode original video animation. In the OVA adaptation, Marufuji loses much of the narrative prominence she holds in the game. She and her team from City Hall are initially involved in chasing a mysterious shadowy figure that appears in town, which leads to an encounter with the protagonist and his companions in a deserted, zombie-filled city. However, following these early events, her importance diminishes considerably. Sources note that she has little narrative weight in the animated version, where her appearances are largely relegated to comedic scenes or jokes centered on her physical appearance, causing her to lose focus compared to the other two primary female characters, Aya Watsuji and Maiko Tamaki. She is still present during the group's investigations into the Pandora Project and the nature of their reality but functions more as a supporting member of the ensemble rather than a lead.
