Description
Kandenchin, also known in English adaptations as S.I.R. which stands for Solar Ion Robot, is a fictional character from the anime series The Flying House. He is an android or robotic assistant who resides in the titular house along with its inventor, Professor Humphrey Bumble. His design is often described as a clown-type or battery-powered android, and he is discovered by the child protagonists Justin, Angie, and Corky when they first take shelter inside the mysterious house in the woods.

In terms of personality, Kandenchin is generally portrayed as a friendly, helpful, and pleasant companion to both the professor and the children. However, a notable and recurring aspect of his character is that he has a dual nature triggered by external physical forces. Specifically, when he receives a jolt of electricity or a strong knock to the head, his personality temporarily shifts from nice to mean and aggressive, causing him to go berserk. This glitch in his programming is a key plot device that significantly affects the group's journey.

Kandenchin's primary motivation is rooted in his function as a robotic assistant, meaning he is designed to aid the professor and maintain the operations of the time-traveling house. He joins the children and the professor on their involuntary adventures through time, serving as both a companion and a crucial component of the house's systems. His role in the story is therefore dual-purpose; he is a source of support and comic relief due to his quirky nature, but also a potential source of chaos when his malfunctioning personality emerges. The initial activation of his berserk state, caused by Professor Bumble's lightning experiment, is the direct cause of the house being sent back in time to the New Testament era.

Throughout the narrative, the group witnesses numerous biblical events, and Kandenchin is a constant presence, interacting with the historical settings they visit. His key relationships are primarily with Professor Bumble, his creator and owner, and the three children. He acts as a steadfast friend and protector to Justin, Angie, and Corky during their travels. His development is most apparent in the series finale, where a knock on his head once again triggers his berserk behavior. In a crucial moment, this aggressive state leads him to attack the house's systems, but ironically, this malfunction is what ultimately repairs the time mechanism and successfully returns the entire group to their original home time period. After this final event, his personality is restored to its standard, friendly state.

As a robot, Kandenchin's notable abilities are tied to his mechanical nature. He is a functional android capable of independent movement, speech, and interaction. His most significant function, however, appears to be his interface with the house's internal mechanisms, as his mental state directly influences the operation of the time machine. He is powered by a battery or solar ion energy, and his unique susceptibility to electrical shocks is a defining characteristic that drives much of the series' central conflict and resolution.
