Description
Mari-hime is a supporting character who appears exclusively in the fifth theatrical film of the Kinnikuman anime series. She is a princess living in Edo-period Japan, the daughter of a powerful shogun. Her background is that of a noblewoman of high rank, residing in the shogun's palace during a time of peace threatened by supernatural forces. Her personality is not explored in great depth, but she is portrayed as a gentle, innocent, and vulnerable young woman caught in a dangerous situation beyond her control. Her primary motivation is survival and the safety of her realm, as she becomes the target of the villain Shuten Douji, a powerful evil being who demands her as his bride and threatens to destroy the Earth if his demand is not met. In the story, Mari-hime functions as the classic damsel in distress whose plight triggers the central conflict of the film. When Kinnikuman accidentally time-travels from the modern era to the Edo period, he encounters the situation and, upon learning of Mari-hime's beauty, pledges to rescue her. The character's resemblance to the modern-day regular character Mari allows Kinnikuman to attempt a disguise, dressing as Mari-hime to confront Shuten Douji, though the ruse is quickly seen through by the villain and his four generals. Her key relationship is with the shogun, her father, who is pressured to surrender her to save the nation. She also has a brief, indirect connection to Kinnikuman, who acts as her protector. The character undergoes no significant development over the course of the film, as she remains a passive figure awaiting rescue. She possesses no special abilities or combat skills, being an ordinary human in a world of super-powered beings. Her role is purely narrative, serving as the motivation for the hero's actions and the prize to be protected. After Kinnikuman and the other Justice Choujin defeat Shuten Douji, Mari-hime is saved and presumably returns to her peaceful life in the shogun's household.
