Description
José Alcántara, known as Joe Kaisaka in the original Japanese version, is the main protagonist and pilot of the giant robot Groizer X. He is a young man stationed at the Akane Island air base, where he works as a highly skilled aviation pilot, recognized as the most talented flyer among his peers.
Joe's background is marked by personal tragedy, as he lost his parents and grew up as an orphan. This difficult childhood has instilled in him a deep sense of empathy, especially towards children. He is known to be a kind person who goes out of his way to help strangers without expecting anything in return, a trait that makes him a natural hero. Despite this underlying kindness, early descriptions of his character portray him as initially having a difficult and confrontational personality, with a violent temperament that makes it hard for him to relate to others. He is a competitive pilot who often seeks to demonstrate his abilities. The sole exception to this difficult demeanor is his relationship with Professor Tobishima, the head of the base, who serves as his great friend, advisor, and a surrogate father figure. Having been happily adopted by the professor, Joe holds him in high regard.
Joe's role in the story begins when he discovers the wounded Rita, the daughter of the scientist who built Groizer X, and the giant robot itself after it crash-lands on the island. Upon learning of the Gaira alien threat and their plans to conquer Earth, Joe takes up the controls of the super robot to defend the planet. His primary motivation is the protection of Earth and its people, a mission he embraces fully as a heroic and selfless defender.
His relationship with Rita is central to his development. As star-crossed lovers, they are brought together by circumstances but are separated by the conflict between their two worlds. Through his partnership with Rita, Joe undergoes significant character development, modifying his initially rough and competitive behavior to become a generous and dependable hero. As a pilot, his notable ability is his exceptional skill in aerial combat, which makes him the ideal candidate to control Groizer X in its battles against the giant bomber robots sent by the alien emperor.
