Description
Subaru Makabe hails from the prestigious Makabe family, whose significant expectations he consistently failed to meet. He once cared deeply for his younger brother, Kaguya, but when Kaguya surpassed him in all areas, Subaru lost his ambition and seriousness. This led to his rejection as the family heir in favor of Kaguya, prompting him to live independently and sever their relationship.

He presents a cheerful and energetic demeanor, though a darker expression occasionally surfaces, reflecting internal struggles stemming from family pressures and his inferiority complex towards Kaguya. Subaru admits he lacks motivation and prefers a relaxed approach to life. This attitude extends to Shadowverse; though attending a specialized academy, he initially doesn't take the game seriously. However, when fully engaged, he demonstrates considerable skill.

As Light Tenryu's first friend at Shadoba College, Subaru helps Light adapt and suggests joining a Shadowverse club for integration. He is shocked when Light chooses the near-defunct Seventh Flame club but reluctantly joins as a non-participating member. His involvement deepens after the club faces expulsion threats if they lose the Shadowverse Club Tournament, pushing him to train with teammates. Key battles drive his development: Fuwari Hahashima of Fourth Wind encourages him during a recruitment battle, while Mimori Amamiya reinforces his potential in a chance encounter. During the tournament, facing Fuwari as Seventh Flame's fourth representative, he finally embraces seriousness due to his clubmates' trust.

In the World Ranking competition, he challenges Kaguya, influenced by Light, openly confronting their rift for the first time. Despite losing, he stops running from their disparity. Later, alongside Itsuki Mitsutagawa, he defeats opponents Zuo Onizuka and Ko Hebigami, securing 4th place.

During the Seven Shadows arc, he battles Kaguya in the Shadow Area. Amidst Kaguya's harsh rejections, Subaru realizes Kaguya suffered from his abandonment and admits his enduring love as a brother. Winning with Masquerade Ghost, Sincere reconciles them. Kaguya then provides a data box containing Draconir's memories and warns of a traitor among the Seven Shadows.

In the final arc against the Arc Ruler, Subaru is assigned with Itsuki to disable the Gaia Tower. Facing Erde in a 2 vs. 1 battle, they nearly die from damage reflecting their life force until their DigiFriends, Bakelus and Slade, intervene. Bakelus evolves into Baccherus, Grand Ghostie, enabling their victory. Kaguya rescues them after the tower collapses. Following the world's salvation, Kaguya moves in with Subaru, and they attend Light's duel against Mikado Shirogane together.

He uses a Shadowcraft deck centered on generating and empowering Ghost tokens (1/1 followers with Storm), utilizing followers with Last Words that revive themselves once without those abilities. Key cards include Mischievous Zombie for Ghost generation and his ace, Masquerade Ghost, which transforms fallen Ghosts into 4/4 Ward followers. Later, he incorporates banishing mechanics via Ghastly Banishment and Colossal Grudge, enabling the summoning of his evolved ace, Masquerade Ghost, Sincere. His deck's Achilles' heel is non-destruction removal, particularly bounce effects that return followers to hand, disrupting his tempo and resource recycling. His Digital Friend is Bakelus, evolving into Baccherus, Grand Ghostie during critical battles.
