Description
Hembei is a small, mysterious, talking pink creature whose appearance is often described as resembling a hippopotamus. He hails from an unnamed magical world, from which he is separated after falling through a tunnel hidden within a waterfall. This accident transports him to the human world, where he awakens inside the closet of a young boy. The tunnel behind him closes, leaving him stranded and unable to return home.

Possessing a gentle and friendly nature, Hembei quickly befriends the boy who finds him. Despite being an unusual visitor, he is accepted into the boy’s household, where he takes up residence. Hembei is defined by his kind-hearted and helpful personality, always eager to assist his new friends. He is curious about the human world and adapts to his new life with a sense of wonder and a desire to be useful.

Hembei’s primary motivation throughout the series is to help others. He uses his magical abilities to aid the children he meets, often aiming to make their dreams come true or solve their problems. As he spends more time in the human world, his initial goal of finding a way back to his own world becomes complicated by the genuine friendships he forms. When the opportunity to return home eventually presents itself, Hembei hesitates, showing that his emotional bonds have become as important to him as his original home.

In the story, Hembei acts as a magical friend and helper to the human boy named Megeru, also known as Maruko in some versions. Their relationship forms the core of the narrative, with Hembei using his powers to support Megeru in various adventures and everyday challenges. The boy’s family is generally unaware of Hembei’s true nature, which creates a sense of secrecy around his presence. Occasionally, the tunnel between the two worlds reopens, allowing animals and friends from Hembei’s original world to cross over and visit, which introduces further magical elements and challenges.

Throughout the series, Hembei undergoes subtle development, particularly in his understanding of friendship and belonging. Initially focused on his unexpected displacement, he gradually discovers a deep sense of loyalty and affection for his human companions. This emotional growth culminates in his choice to hesitate when a chance to return home arises, and later, he and Megeru travel together to his original world using his magical parasol, bridging the two halves of his life.

Hembei possesses several notable magical abilities, all centered around his distinctive parasol. With this parasol, he can fly and perform various spells. He is also able to speak with animals and has the power to fulfill peoples dreams. The parasol itself is a versatile tool that enables his adventures and allows him to assist those around him.
