TV-Series
Description
Michael Hanagata serves as the manager of the idol group Mix Juice in the anime Wandaba Style. He is a skinny man with a distinctive blonde afro and large sunglasses, and he is known for his loud and boastful manner. His primary motivation is financial gain; he dreams of managing the best band in the world and earning millions. This ambition drives his actions throughout the series. He is portrayed as shady and sleazy, often prioritizing his own interests over those of the group he represents.

His role in the story is central to the plot’s premise. He strikes a deal with the young genius Dr. Susumu Tsukumo, who believes that humans have never actually landed on the moon and wants to prove it with eco-friendly rockets. Hanagata sees an opportunity to make Mix Juice famous by having them perform a concert on the moon, and he offers the group as test pilots for Tsukumo’s experimental rockets. This collaboration sets the series’ events in motion.

In terms of personality, Hanagata is overconfident and believes he knows everything. He often puts himself in the spotlight more than his clients. Despite his selfishness, he is persistent and resourceful when it comes to pursuing his goals. A recurring comedic trait is that he is frequently interrupted whenever he tries to say his own name. He also often finds himself inadvertently launched into orbit as a result of Tsukumo’s experiments, surviving these mishaps with comedic resilience.

Key relationships include his interactions with the four members of Mix Juice, whom he manages with a mix of exploitation and opportunistic care. His relationship with Dr. Tsukumo is transactional: he provides funding and test subjects in exchange for the chance at a lunar concert. Throughout the series, Hanagata does not undergo significant character development; he remains consistently motivated by money and self-promotion. Notable abilities include his ethically flexible negotiation skills and his surprising durability in the face of scientific disasters.
