TV-Series
Description
Kiku #8 is an android and the laboratory assistant to the young genius Dr. Susumu Tsukumo in the anime Wandaba Style. Designated with the number eight in her name, she is a human satellite, a machine specifically constructed to survive the rigors of space travel and function as a component in Tsukumo’s experimental launches. Physically, she has short pink hair and red eyes, and her expression is often noted as being placid or faceless, contributing to her machine-like initial demeanor. Her body is made of a special solar-powered metal, which allows her to recharge her energy reserves by simply exposing herself to sunlight. This design leads to her spending a significant amount of time unclothed after re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, a trait that is often played for comedic effect within the series.

As Dr. Tsukumo’s creation, Kiku #8 is deeply loyal and obedient, serving as the calm and calculating anchor to his eccentric and obsessive personality. While the doctor is a child prodigy who refuses to believe humans have landed on the moon and is determined to get there using only clean, environmentally friendly methods, Kiku is the one who executes his plans, often pointing out the flaws in his calculations with a detached, factual tone. Her primary motivation is to support Tsukumo’s ambitions. She participates willingly as the test subject for his various wacky inventions, such as high-speed catapults and giant carbonated bottles, frequently being launched into orbit or across the ocean. Her role in the story is that of the straight man to the chaos surrounding Tsukumo and the aspiring idol group Mix Juice, who he aims to send to the moon for a historic concert. She is frequently the one monitoring trajectories, calculating distances, and providing a calm report on the status of their increasingly improbable missions.

As the series progresses, Kiku #8 begins to show signs of emotional development beyond her programming, marking a subtle character arc. While she starts as a purely functional android, she eventually expresses more complex human feelings. In one instance, she tells Dr. Tsukumo that she has a new feeling she identifies as getting pissed off, demonstrating a capacity for frustration. More significantly, she develops a romantic affection for her creator, culminating in a moment where she explicitly declares her love for him. This confession highlights her transition from a mere tool to a being with genuine emotional depth and personal desires. Her relationship with Dr. Tsukumo is the central dynamic of her character, evolving from master-servant to something more intimate and personal. She also interacts with the members of Mix Juice and the greedy manager Michael Hanagata, often acting as a foil to their loud and dramatic personalities with her quiet efficiency. At the end of many episodes, she hosts a segment called Kiku's Countdown Corner, where she neutrally announces the number of days remaining before the deadline to reach the moon, further emphasizing her role as the series’ logical timekeeper.

In terms of abilities, Kiku #8 is remarkably durable and possesses skills far beyond a standard human. As a human satellite, she can survive unprotected in the vacuum of space and withstand the intense heat of atmospheric re-entry. Her body can absorb solar radiation to replenish her power, making sunlight essential for her operation. She has a super-drill suit that she can wear on her back, which is equipped with shooter drills for combat or utility purposes, although the series is primarily comedic and these abilities are used in the context of outlandish scientific experiments. Her most notable ability is her computational mind; she can rapidly perform complex orbital calculations and navigate spacecraft, acting as the practical brain behind Tsukumo’s theoretical genius. Her development culminates in a display of autonomy and deep care, as she makes a critical decision to save the doctor, showing that her journey has been about learning not just to function, but to feel and to choose.
