Description
Maya Ooba, also known as Black Maya, is one of the main female characters in the anime series Guardian Hearts. She is a ninja from a traditional clan, though the reasons for her status as a runaway are not disclosed in the story. Despite leaving her clan, Maya continues to acknowledge her heritage and strictly upholds its customs. One such tradition requires that any outsider who discovers a ninja's true identity must be killed to preserve secrecy. When the protagonist Kazuya stumbles upon her ninja tools and learns her secret, Maya attempts to follow through on this rule. She is stopped by Hina, the Guardian Heart, who protects Kazuya. In the ensuing conflict, Kazuya helps Maya escape, thereby saving her life. Because another clan tradition demands that debts be repaid, Maya feels obligated to move in with him in order to return the favor.
Maya's personality is initially defined by resentment and a rigid adherence to duty.
