Description
Keel Zeibel is a main character from the world of Inferia, where he works as a scholar and researcher. He is seventeen years old, stands 174 cm tall, and has a slim build. His appearance is marked by his dark purple eyes and light grayish-purple hair, a portion of which he keeps tied in a ponytail. His attire typically consists of a white robe over a dark green shirt, complemented by a large collared cape and a white wooden choker that signifies his status as a scholar.
Keel grew up in the village of Rasheans as a childhood friend of Reid Hershel and Farah Oersted. As a young child, he was known for being a crybaby and having weak stamina, which fostered an inferiority complex, particularly in contrast to the more physically capable Reid. Recognizing his academic potential, his parents sent him away to study at Mintche University when he was just thirteen years old. There, he became a research assistant in the Light Craymelology department.
His time at the university profoundly shaped his personality. To compensate for his childhood insecurities and his lack of physical prowess, Keel embraced his intellectual gifts with pride. This caused him to become smug, antisocial, and dismissive of others, often coming across as flatly rude. He prioritizes his studies and research above all else, having stopped believing in what he considers childish fantasies to base his entire worldview on what can be tangibly proven through science and logic. He often sees things in absolutes, as either true or false, and struggles with nuance or gray areas.
His intellectual pursuits eventually led him to develop the controversial theory of World Chain Destruction, for which he was expelled from the university. Following his expulsion, he secluded himself at the Mt. Mintche Observatory, where the main protagonists Reid, Farah, and the Celestian girl Meredy eventually find him at the start of their journey. Keel’s primary motivation initially is to prove his theory correct and establish himself as a respected authority, viewing Meredy more as a fascinating research subject than a person. However, he is recruited to help Meredy prevent a catastrophe known as the Grand Fall, which requires traveling across the world to form pacts with the Greater Craymels.
Throughout the story, Keel serves as the party's intellectual core, often providing theoretical knowledge and solving complex problems that require logical thinking. His most significant relationship develops with Meredy. At first, he is cold and treats her as a subject for his studies, but as their journey progresses, he grows to genuinely care for her. He becomes protective, showing a softer and less rational side of himself, and at the conclusion of the story, he chooses to leave his homeworld of Inferia and stay with Meredy in her world, Celestia.
Over the course of the adventure, Keel experiences considerable personal growth. He is forced to confront the limits of pure theory when faced with real-world situations and begins to understand the value of faith and the existence of things that cannot be empirically proven. He becomes less stubborn and his worldview expands to include the maybes. Furthermore, while he starts with noticeably poor physical endurance, his journey helps him build some resilience, and he matures from a socially awkward scholar into a more rounded individual capable of deep emotional connection.
In combat, Keel is a mage who wields rods and maces, though he lacks strong physical attack power. He specializes in Craymel Artes, which are magical spells. He begins with basic elemental spells like Aqua Edge, Wind Blade, and Fireball, which correspond to the Inferian elements of Water, Wind, and Fire. Despite being a student of Light Craymelology, he initially does not have access to light-based magic. As the party gains new abilities, Keel can expand his repertoire of spells based on the Greater Craymels they acquire. A unique feature of his magic is the ability to reduce the delay in casting his spells by inputting specific directional commands during the casting animation.
