Description
Mevrouw Suliman is the king’s royal sorcerer and the highest authority on magic in the kingdom featured in the anime Howl’s Moving Castle. In the film adaptation, she combines elements of two characters from the original novel: Mrs. Pentstemmon and Wizard Sulliman. She serves as the court-appointed sorceress who supplies magic for the country’s military forces and the king’s personal use. She appears as an elderly woman who rarely rises from her chair, but her calm and composed demeanor conceals immense power and a calculating nature. She uses a staff as a focus for her spells and commands a group of identical-looking servants, possibly clones she created, as well as a loyal dog named Heen.
Mevrouw Suliman’s personality is authoritative, disciplined, and pragmatic. She believes in order and control, viewing magic as a resource that must be managed for the state’s benefit. She is disappointed by her former protégé, Howl, whom she once considered a magnificent and gifted heir. When he left her tutelage and made a pact with the fire demon Calcifer, she began watching him closely, seeing his selfish use of magic as a dangerous path. Her primary motivation is to prevent wizards from losing their humanity to their powers, a fate she observed in the Witch of the Waste. She fears that Howl will become a monster if he continues to rely on his demon pact, and she is determined to either bring him back into service or strip his abilities.
In the story, Mevrouw Suliman functions as a central antagonist. She summons Sophie to the palace under the pretense that Howl has sent his mother, and there she reveals her knowledge of Howl’s past and his pact. She demonstrates her power by stripping the Witch of the Waste of all magic, reducing her to a harmless and senile old woman. She then gives Howl an ultimatum: serve her or lose his powers. When Howl arrives to rescue Sophie, Mevrouw Suliman attempts to trap him by turning him into a monster, but Sophie’s love and the strength of Howl’s will allow him to escape. Later, she continues to pursue Howl and Sophie, sending her henchmen to attack their home. However, after Prince Justin returns and the war ends, Mevrouw Suliman observes the resolution through a crystal globe and decides to call off the war entirely, showing a capacity for change in the face of genuine peace.
Her key relationships are defined by authority and conflict. She is Howl’s former mentor, and their bond is one of disappointment and control. She regards the Witch of the Waste as a cautionary example of what happens when a wizard lets a demon consume them. Her interactions with Sophie are adversarial but also revealing: she recognizes Sophie’s love for Howl and sees it as a weakness she can exploit, though it ultimately contributes to Howl’s salvation. Mevrouw Suliman’s development is subtle; she begins as an inflexible enforcer of order but ends by choosing peace when the conditions that drove the war are resolved.
Notable abilities include her advanced magic, which surpasses that of Howl and the Witch of the Waste. She can strip other wizards of their powers, transform beings, and create magical clones or servants. She also has the authority to direct the kingdom’s magical resources and influence the course of the war. Through her staff and her connection to the king, she wields both magical and political power, making her one of the most formidable figures in the film.
