Description
Giuseppe Mayart is a pivotal character in Wicked City, whose true nature is deliberately concealed behind a carefully constructed facade. He is introduced as a two hundred year old mystic and a signatory to the crucial peace treaty between the human world and the Black World, the realm of demons. This treaty is set to renew a period of harmony, making his protection the central mission for agents of the elite Black Guard.
Initially, Mayart presents himself as a significant burden. He is diminutive in stature, foul-mouthed, and appears to be a lecherous, mean-spirited old man whose primary interests are base pleasures. His behavior is that of a comedic nuisance, constantly complaining and making crude remarks. His most defining deceptive trait is his apparent obsession with sex workers, which causes him to repeatedly sneak away from his bodyguards to visit brothels and soaplands, directly endangering his own life and theirs. This annoying and seemingly self-destructive personality leads his designated protectors, Taki and Makie, to view him as a liability, a "load" that must be dragged to safety through a gauntlet of violent attacks by extremists.
However, this persona is a complete and deliberate fabrication. As the narrative reaches its climax, Mayart sheds his act entirely, revealing himself to be a competent, powerful, and calculating individual who was in control of events from the beginning. His true motivation is not to survive, but to orchestrate a specific outcome: the union between his two bodyguards, Taki (a human) and Makie (a demon). He reveals that his real mission was never to be protected, but to protect them, guiding them into a dangerous, trial-by-fire scenario designed to forge a deep bond between the pair. His ultimate goal is for them to conceive a child, a hybrid being carrying the gifts of both worlds, who can become a leader for a new era and ensure everlasting peace.
His key relationships are defined by this hidden agenda. With the protagonist Taki, he plays the part of an irritating, helpless old man to lower the agent's guard and foster a protective instinct. With Makie, his actions are similar, using his apparent vulnerability to force her and Taki to work together. This makes the final reveal shocking, as the man they believed they were saving steps forward to fight alongside them. In the final confrontation with the villain, Mr. Shadow, Mayart discards his mask of frailty, demonstrating potent combat abilities, including generating powerful bolts of supernatural lightning to defend Taki and Makie.
Mayart's character development is unique, as he does not undergo a personal transformation. Instead, the audience's perception of him is transformed. He transitions from a pathetic comic relief figure into a serious, almost prophetic puppet master whose seemingly foolish actions were the carefully laid steps of a grand plan centuries in the making. His notable abilities are thus twofold. First, he possesses masterful deception and psychological manipulation, fooling everyone, including the audience, for the majority of the film. Second, he is a surprisingly formidable fighter, capable of engaging powerful demonic entities and holding his own, a skill he hides until the final act to ensure his scheme comes to fruition.
