Description
Renzaburo Taki is the central human protagonist of the 1987 anime film. By day, he maintains the facade of an ordinary salaryman, working in the sales department of an electronics company in Tokyo. However, this is a cover for his true profession as a highly skilled agent of the Black Guard, a secret organization tasked with policing the fragile coexistence between the human world and a parallel dimension known as the Black World, which is inhabited by demons.

Taki is characterized as a cynical, hardened, and confident operative, possessing a sharp, pragmatic edge born from his experience in a secret war few humans know exists. He is a self-assured womanizer and a playboy, often approaching relationships with a sense of casual conquest, as demonstrated in his first encounter with a woman at a bar. Despite this macho and sometimes detached exterior, his personality is not entirely obnoxious; he is ultimately painted as a romantic rather than a mere ladykiller, capable of genuine emotional depth. He is driven by a strong, if initially unexamined, sense of duty, but he is not a mindless follower. His motivations become deeply personal as the mission progresses, shifting from professional obligation to a powerful need to protect his partner, Makie. He is willing to risk his job and his life to rescue her, fully aware that he is walking into a trap.

In the story, Taki is assigned by the Black Guard to protect Giuseppe Mayart, a lecherous and ancient mystic who is a key signatory for the renewal of the long-standing peace treaty between the two worlds. This mission leads to his reluctant partnership with Makie, a beautiful and powerful agent from the Black World. Their relationship is the core of his role in the narrative. It begins with mutual professional distrust due to their different species, but evolves into a deep romantic connection as they fight side-by-side against extremist demons who want to sabotage the treaty. The most significant revelation is that Taki and Makie themselves are the actual peace treaty; their successful union and the child they can potentially conceive, a genetically engineered hybrid of both worlds, represent the only true hope for a lasting future.

Taki develops from a relatively detached and cynical agent, who questions whether either world is worth protecting, into a man with a very clear and personal reason to fight. His relationship with Makie is the catalyst for this change, forcing him to confront his prejudices and move beyond his superficial womanizing to find genuine love and a sense of purpose. His key relationships are with his partner Makie, who evolves from an assignment to his primary motivation; Giuseppe Mayart, the perverted VIP he is tasked with guarding who is often more of a hindrance than a help; and the various antagonists, including the spider woman from the film's opening scene and Mr. Shadow, the leader of the demon extremists. He is notable for his physical resilience, able to withstand tremendous punishment. His primary ability is his combat prowess, utilizing a specially modified, powerful handgun with a massive recoil to battle demons. He also possesses near-superhuman physical strength, allowing him to punch through his supernatural enemies.
