Description
Norris Packard is a veteran officer of the Principality of Zeon and the loyal retainer of the aristocratic Sahalin family, serving as a surrogate father to Aina and Ginias Sahalin from their childhood. Born in UC 0041, Packard entered the family’s service and later suffered the loss of his wife, which led him into severe alcoholism. The Sahalin family helped him overcome his addiction, forging an unbreakable bond of loyalty. After the death of the Sahalin parents, Packard raised Ginias and Aina as his own children, with Aina in particular viewing him as a father figure. When the One Year War erupted in UC 0079, Packard served both as a Zeon mobile suit pilot and as the chief defender of the secret Southeast Asian base where Ginias oversaw the Apsalus Project, an experimental mobile armor designed to strike the Earth Federation headquarters at Jaburo. His primary duties included protecting the base and ensuring Aina’s safety during her role as the project’s test pilot, though he grew increasingly frustrated with Ginias’s reckless decisions that endangered their personnel. Packard first encountered the 08th MS Team when he sortied in a MS-06JC Zaku II Type C against Shiro Amada’s RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Type, ultimately retreating after his suit sustained heavy damage. Later, while providing air support in a Do-DAI YS fighter during Aina’s test of the Apsalus II, his aircraft was damaged and he was forced to withdraw under orders, a decision that troubled him deeply. As the war reached its final phase and the base faced a full Federation assault, Packard volunteered to stay behind and hold off the enemy forces to allow the Zanzibar-class cruiser Kerguelen to evacuate. Aware of the growing bond between Aina and Shiro Amada, he accepted their relationship and resolved to test Shiro’s worthiness through combat. Piloting his personal MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom, Packard engaged the entire 08th MS Team alone in a ruined city, destroying two RX-79(G) Gundam Ground Types and two RX-75 Guntank Mass Production Types before facing Shiro in the RX-79(G)Ez-8 Gundam Ez8. Though he was ultimately defeated, he succeeded in eliminating the last Guntank, completing his mission to remove the artillery threat to the Kerguelen. His sacrifice was rendered tragic when the hospital ship was later destroyed by a Federation sniper unit acting on separate orders. Packard possessed a stern and intimidating exterior that concealed a deeply honorable and caring nature, described as embodying the virtue of a great person. He held a paternal tenderness for Aina, prioritizing her safety above his own, and conducted himself with the classical military ideals of duty, honor, and self-sacrifice. He demonstrated emotional maturity in accepting Aina’s feelings for Shiro, valuing her happiness over his own possessiveness. Considered one of the most skilled mobile suit pilots of the war, Packard exhibited ace-level combat proficiency, tactical acumen, and the ability to exploit battlefield terrain and environmental factors to their fullest. His leadership and mentorship were evident both in raising the Sahalin children and in his role commanding the defense of the base, where he balanced discipline with genuine care.
