Description
Emu Hino, also known by her later name Hǔ Qīng-Lán, is a central figure in the Crying Freeman narrative. She is introduced as a solitary and talented Japanese painter in her late twenties who lives in a large, aging family estate, her wealth having diminished following the death of her father. Her life is defined by a profound sense of loneliness and a quiet resignation to her fate.

Her entire existence is transformed when she inadvertently witnesses a hitman, later known as Crying Freeman, assassinate a yakuza boss. Rather than fleeing in terror, she is captivated by the sight of the killer’s tears and becomes intrigued by the man who identifies himself only as Yo. Knowing that as the sole witness, his code dictates he must return to kill her, she chooses to confront death on her own terms. She paints a portrait of him and calmly awaits his arrival. When he comes to fulfill his mission, she requests one final favor: to take her virginity so that she may not die as a virgin. This intimate encounter irrevocably changes the dynamic between them, as the conditioned assassin finds he cannot bring himself to end her life, and a powerful love blossoms between them.

Her motivation shifts from a passive acceptance of loneliness to an active, fearless pursuit of love and belonging within a world of violence. After being critically injured by a yakuza member seeking to use her to find Freeman, she chooses to follow him back to the headquarters of the 108 Dragons, the powerful Chinese crime syndicate he serves. Her strength of will and resolve impress the organization’s leaders, who initially saw her as a weakness. There, she embraces her new life, receiving a large tiger tattoo on her back, with two cubs tattooed on her torso, symbolizing her union with Freeman, whose own tattoo is a dragon. She marries Yo and is officially given the Chinese name Hǔ Qīng-Lán, which translates to Tiger Pure-Orchid, reflecting her new status.

As Hǔ Qīng-Lán, her role evolves from a sheltered artist and the object of the hero's affection into a formidable partner and leader. She and Freeman are named the heirs to the 108 Dragons, and she actively participates in the syndicate's dangerous affairs, facing challenges from rival gangs and internal traitors with courage. Her key relationships are, of course, with her husband, Freeman, whose humanity she awakened, and with the organization's matriarch, Mother Tiger, who initially doubted her but eventually came to respect her strength. A significant part of her development involves coming into her own power as a fighter. This is exemplified when she comes into possession of the legendary and cursed katana Muramasa. Recognizing her as its true master, the sword becomes an extension of her newfound warrior identity, and she travels to Kowloon to master swordsmanship, becoming a highly dangerous swordswoman in her own right. Her abilities, therefore, lie not only in her artistic skill but in her immense personal courage, unshakable will, cleverness, and eventually, her prowess with a blade.
