Description
Bunta Marui is a third-year student and tennis team regular at Rikkaidai Fuzoku Middle School. Standing 164 cm tall, he is the shortest among Rikkaidai's third-year regulars. He sports bright red-pink hair and constantly chews bubblegum during matches to counter stamina issues caused by his arm weights.
Originally from Kanagawa Third Elementary School, Marui joined Rikkaidai and competed in the Newcomer's Tournament as a first-year, defeating Akutagawa Jirō and inspiring his shift to volley tennis. In his second year, he befriended Kirihara Akaya after witnessing Kirihara challenge Rikkaidai's "Three Monsters" (Yanagi, Sanada, Yukimura) and enter his first Bloodshot Mode. Marui primarily partners with Jackal Kuwahara in doubles, a core Rikkaidai pairing established in their first year and maintained through regional and national tournaments.
Marui specializes in serve-and-volley tennis, proclaiming himself a "genius" for his innovative net techniques. These include: *Tightrope Walking* (a volley rolling along the net cord before dropping unpredictably), *Iron Pole Strike* (a shot bouncing off the net post into the opponent's court), *Temporal Difference Hell* (a deceptive smash altering trajectory at the last moment), and *Wonder Castle* (a defensive net technique blocking all shots unless lobbed, developed during U-17 training). His U-17 performance stats rate Technique at 5/5 and Mental at 3/5, with Power at 2/5 and Stamina at 3/5.
His competitive record includes helping Rikkaidai achieve the fastest Kanagawa Prefectural win. At the Kanto Regionals, he and Jackal defeated Seigaku's Momoshiro/Kaidō 6–1. During Nationals, Marui intentionally lost his semifinal match against Nagoya Seitoku to provoke Kirihara's Devil Mode, then fell to Seigaku's Golden Pair (Kikumaru/Ōishi) in the finals. In the U-17 camp, he and Jackal won an elimination tie-break 10–8. Later paired with Kite Eishirō against high schoolers Kimijima Ikuto and Tōno Atsukyō, Marui unlocked *Perfect Fortress* (an early name for Wonder Castle), sustained an eye injury but continued playing, and ultimately struck Tōno's knee at Kimijima's request to secure medical treatment for Yukimura. He represented Japan as the No. 7 middle schooler in the World Cup, with limited on-court play but off-court contributions through baking and team support.
Marui lives with his grandmother, parents, and two younger brothers; his father works at a manufacturing company. He spends his allowance on sweets, owns a cotton candy machine, makes daily bentō, cares for his brothers, and visits cake shops. Academically, he frequents the home economics room, excels in Japanese and Music, but struggles with Science and Mathematics. His closest bond is with doubles partner Jackal Kuwahara, whom he considers his best friend. He also mentors Kirihara Akaya, treating him to ramen and guiding him through challenges. During Rikkaidai's Ocean Festival, he played Cinderella's stepsister opposite Yagyū and Kirihara.
Marui balances self-proclaimed genius status with team loyalty. His partnership with Kite was tested by betrayal during U-17 but rebuilt through coordinated play, demonstrating Marui's doubles adaptability. Off-court, he bakes cakes for team events and international players like France's Camus. Despite his confidence, he prioritizes team objectives, exemplified by accepting Kimijima's deal to aid Yukimura.
