TV-Series
Description
Mephisto I is a central demonic figure in the original 1960s Akuma-kun television series, acting as a partner and reluctant servant to the young protagonist, Shingo Yamada. He is summoned by the ancient Professor Faust, who has lived for three hundred years in anticipation of the child prophesied to fight against misfortune and supernatural evil. Recognizing Shingo as the one chosen to combat the Yokai and other creatures that cause chaos in the world, Faust compels Mephisto to swear an oath of loyalty to the boy. To ensure his compliance, Shingo is also given an oddly shaped magical flute once belonging to King Solomon, which can compel Yokai and demons like Mephisto to obey its player.

In terms of appearance, Mephisto I cuts a distinctive and somewhat elegant figure. He is typically depicted as a man-about-town, dressed in formal attire that includes a top hat, a cape, and a cane. This cane is not merely an accessory but serves as a magical weapon in their battles against various supernatural foes. Despite his demonic nature and sophisticated look, his personality is notably flawed and far from all-powerful. He is described as being unreliable and can be easily bribed with chocolate, a weakness that Professor Faust exploits to secure his initial cooperation. One user recollection also notes he is frequently depressed that no women are interested in him because of his unusual, pointy-nosed demonic appearance.

His role in the story is that of a grumbling yet indispensable ally to Shingo. Together, they form an investigative and combative duo, taking on cases that involve monsters, ghosts, and other malevolent beings. The dynamic is often framed as a partnership of opposites; while the boy genius Shingo is cold, highly practical, and sometimes struggles to understand human emotions, Mephisto is portrayed as more cautious, fearful, and empathetic, with a keen understanding of human feelings. This complementary relationship is tested through various adventures, which can be surprisingly violent for the era, including encounters with creatures like a giant crow that tricks Mephisto into signing a disadvantageous contract, a long-tongued reptile that swallows the pair whole, and a witch who shares the injuries inflicted upon her portrait.

Regarding his development and continuity, Mephisto I does not remain the sole demon partner throughout the series. Due to reasons related to production, the original character was replaced from the tenth episode onward by a younger brother character named Sultan Mephisto. This change is noted by viewers and sources as a significant shift in the show's cast, with the younger sibling taking over the role of Shingo's supernatural associate for the remainder of the series. His notable abilities include his knowledge of the supernatural world, his physical combat skills using his magical cane, and a degree of cleverness, although this is often undercut by his own self-interest and gullibility, as seen when he is tricked by the giant crow. His overall motivation for assisting Shingo remains rooted in the magical compulsion of the Solomon Flute and his forced oath, rather than any inherent desire to do good, making him a classic example of a reluctant hero bound to a greater cause.
