Description
Gizmo, known in Japanese as Zenmaijikake, is a character whose specific nature changes between different versions of the anime. In the original series, Gizmo begins as a simple windup toy robot owned by a boy named Chris Peeper. When the magical Superbook transports Chris and his friend Joy back in time, Gizmo is brought to life, growing to full size and gaining the ability to walk and talk on his own. Despite coming to life, he retains a key physical feature: a windup key on his back. Winding this key restores his energy, but it only lasts for a limited time, leading to a recurring situation where his power runs low at critical moments. In the second season of the original run, which takes place several years later, this Gizmo is replaced by a new, fully life-sized robot built by Chris's father or uncle, though both versions look nearly identical.

In the 2011 reboot of Superbook, Gizmo is a robot from the start, owned by Chris and created by his father, Professor Crispin Quantum. He accompanies Chris and Joy on their journeys through time. In this version, Gizmo is also shown to possess a remarkable internal storage capacity, able to produce a vast and unusual array of items from within himself, including different outfits, a mechanical parrot, an anvil, and dozens of basketballs. He also has the ability to transform into different vehicles, such as a mini-jet and an all-terrain car, increasing his size enough for the children to ride inside him.

Gizmo’s physical design in all versions is distinctive and draws inspiration from a medieval knight, specifically a Templar crusader, which aligns with the series' Christian themes. He has a peach-colored body, a large unibrow shaped like the letter M, simple dot eyes, and a blue nose. An unusual but consistent visual trait is that his mouth never moves to speak; instead, his blue nose flashes red when he talks, and his expression shifts by changing the shape of his mouth, turning happy or sad as the mood dictates. His outfit is primarily red, featuring a golden cross on his chest, and his limbs are blue with red ball-shaped joints.

Throughout the different versions of the series, Gizmo serves as a constant companion and protector for the child characters, Chris and Joy, as they travel back to Biblical times. He is a major source of comic relief, often attempting to help in dangerous situations with little success. For example, he might try to stop a significant Biblical event or put out a fire with a small built-in squirt gun. In the 2011 reboot, his role as comic relief became more pronounced, characterized by frequent interjections and sometimes lengthy whining, which made him a notably different and broader character compared to his original counterpart. Despite his humorous nature, his presence is essential to the group dynamic, and his own malfunctions or predicaments often serve to highlight the moral lesson of an episode, such as when water damage causes him to malfunction and helps teach the children about forgiveness.

Gizmo's relationships are central to the story. He is deeply loyal to his owner, Chris, and is a friend to Joy. His interactions with the human characters from the Bible are also notable; despite his robotic and anachronistic appearance, the Biblical figures they meet never seem disturbed or surprised by him, often accepting him without question. In the second season of the original series, his primary partnership shifts to Chris's cousin, Uri. While specific emotional development for Gizmo himself is not a primary focus, his presence is a constant, and in the 2011 series, his experiences and the lessons learned alongside his human friends are a key part of the narrative, helping to resolve the children's personal dilemmas.
