Description
Azusa Yamato is the secondary main character in the Superbook anime, known as Joy in the English-language version of the series. She is the next-door neighbor and best friend of the protagonist, Sho Azuka, who is called Christopher Peeper in the English dub. Her full name is given in the original Japanese version, while her last name is never mentioned in the English adaptation.
In terms of physical appearance, Azusa has a small frame, light skin, and brown eyes. She has blonde hair with wavy bangs, though the shade varies between episodes and video qualities, sometimes appearing in shades of orange, yellow, or green. Her typical outfit consists of a pink and white dress with a red belt, paired with red shoes. In the second series, which takes place two years after the first, she is depicted as taller.
Azusa has a generally sweet and conscientious nature, particularly when it comes to responsibilities such as schoolwork, where she is shown to be more diligent than Sho. However, she also has a short temper and can become angry easily when Sho teases her. Throughout the first series, there are hints that she may have romantic feelings for Sho, as she tends to show signs of jealousy whenever he looks fondly at other female characters, such as Eve or Rebecca in their respective episodes.
Her primary motivation is her loyalty to Sho and her sense of adventure. She accompanies him on his travels through time via the Superbook, a sentient Bible that transports them to biblical events. In the first series, she actively travels back in time alongside Sho and the robot Gizmo to witness stories from the Old Testament and the life of Jesus Christ. In the second series, the mechanism of time travel changes, and Azusa takes on more of a support role, keeping watch and controlling the computer from the present day while others travel to the past.
Her most significant relationship is with Sho Azuka, her best friend and partner in their biblical adventures. She also interacts closely with Gizmo, the clockwork robot who accompanies them on their journeys. The three form the core group that experiences the biblical narratives firsthand.
Azusa does not possess supernatural abilities of her own. Her primary function in the story is as a witness to biblical events alongside Sho, allowing the audience to experience the narratives through her perspective. Her role involves asking questions, reacting to the situations she encounters, and providing a viewpoint that represents curiosity and moral engagement with the stories being presented.
