Description
Chris, whose full name is Christopher Peeper and who is known originally as Sho Asuka in Japanese, serves as the main protagonist of the anime series Superbook. He is portrayed as an energetic boy with black, spiky hair and dark brown eyes. His typical outfit consists of a blue jacket over a yellow undershirt, blue pants with dark patches on the knees, a black belt featuring a red buckle, light yellow socks, and black shoes.

Chris is the son of Professor Fred Peeper, an eccentric and often absent-minded archaeologist and inventor, and his wife Phoebe. He is also the owner of a small wind-up robot toy named Gizmo, who becomes a fully functioning companion during their adventures. Chris lives next door to his best friend, Joy, and has a pet Yorkshire Terrier named Ruffles.

In terms of personality, Chris is initially depicted as a fun-loving but somewhat lazy and self-centered boy. He has a strong dislike for schoolwork and household chores, often going to ridiculous extremes to avoid them, which frequently puts him at odds with his father. He can be hot-blooded, stubborn, and possesses a vengeful streak when his property is damaged, as seen when he reacts furiously to Joy accidentally breaking Gizmo or when others smash his guitar. Despite these flaws, Chris has a good heart and genuinely cares for his family, Joy, and Gizmo, often learning to be more responsible and humble through his experiences.

Chris’s primary motivation and role in the story are driven by the discovery of the Superbook, a magical Bible that transports him, Joy, and Gizmo back in time to witness biblical events firsthand. These journeys serve as the core of the narrative, as Chris and his friends observe and sometimes interact with key figures from the Old and New Testaments. The purpose of these adventures is often to teach Chris a moral or spiritual lesson that directly relates to a problem he is facing in his present-day life, such as learning humility before a band audition, finding the courage to face a bully, or understanding the importance of forgiveness.

His key relationships are central to the series. His dynamic with Joy is that of a close friendship with occasional teasing and minor conflicts, though she often acts as more conscientious minder to balance his impulsive nature. His relationship with his father is marked by mutual respect but also by Chris's schemes to avoid work, which often lead to trouble. Gizmo, his robot, is his constant companion and a frequent source of comic relief, though Chris values him as a friend.

Chris undergoes noticeable character development throughout the series. His personality slowly improves as he directly experiences the lessons of the Bible, fostering a more responsible and less selfish attitude. Episodes often conclude with Chris applying the wisdom he has learned from figures like David, Jesus, or Daniel to resolve his own personal conflicts, such as apologizing to his mother after a lesson on sacrifice or forgiving a friend after witnessing Jacob and Esau reconcile.

In terms of notable abilities, while Chris is not a superhero, he demonstrates a number of talents. He has a scientific and gadgeteering mind, which he uses to build devices like a hoverboard ramp, though he is not on the same level as his inventor father. He is the lead guitarist in a garage band and enjoys skateboarding. He is also depicted as being surprisingly strong and athletic, able to perform physical feats such as leaping out of danger while carrying his friends or enduring significant impacts. As the series progresses, especially in the second season, his role shifts from a direct time-traveler to a guide who remains in the present, using a computer that has absorbed the Superbook's powers to monitor and assist his cousin Uri and the newly-constructed Gizmo in their search for his lost dog, Ruffles.
