Description
Genichirō Sanada is a third-year student at Rikkaidai Fuzoku Middle School and serves as the vice-captain of the tennis team, having temporarily acted as captain during Yukimura Seiichi's absence. His serious and strict personality extends to both others and himself, a trait reinforced by his position as president of the school's public morals committee. This discipline is deeply rooted in his daily practice of iaido and Zen meditation. He rises at 4:00 AM each day for early morning practice and meditation, followed by calligraphy, school patrols, and tennis training—a routine that reflects his rigorous self-discipline and relentless commitment to improvement.
Sanada first met Yukimura at a tennis school when they were both four years old. After being excluded by older children, they formed a doubles partnership. During a match against upperclassmen, Sanada encouraged a disheartened Yukimura not to give up, leading to a comeback victory. That day became Sanada’s favorite memory and marked the beginning of their collaboration in developing the Fuu Rin Ka Zan technique. Before middle school, Sanada placed as first runner-up in a junior tournament, losing only to Yukimura. He was later defeated by Tezuka Kunimitsu in a challenge match. Upon entering Rikkaidai, Sanada and Yukimura promised to lead the team without losses for three years. Along with Yanagi Renji, they formed the Rikkai Big Three and won Nationals in their first year. In their second year, Kirihara Akaya challenged the regulars and was defeated by Sanada. When Yukimura collapsed due to illness, Sanada took over the team and enforced a strict policy that losing was unacceptable, backed by iron-fist punishments. He promised Yukimura he would wait for his return undefeated.
An all-rounder who plays offensively, Sanada attacks opponents head-on with exceptional technique, skill, and control. He executes precise shots like a topspin lob that lands consistently on the line. His signature technique is the Fu Rin Ka In Zan Rai, originally called Fuu Rin Ka Zan, a style based on Sun Tzu’s strategies. Fuu is an extremely fast swing derived from a sword-drawing technique, making the racket and ball appear invisible and neutralizing spin—though it does not fully cancel extreme spins like the Tezuka Phantom. Ka is a powerful shot that can be delivered as a smash, forehand, or backhand, overwhelming opponents with force and concealing the user’s weaknesses to render predictive abilities useless. In counters spin-based techniques and was used to defeat Atobe Keigo in their first match. Rai, one of Sanada’s two ultimate techniques, was previously sealed to prepare for a match against Tezuka. It breaks racket strings upon contact and grants inhuman speed, allowing strikes from anywhere on the court. The ball bounces at a right angle after hitting the ground, making it nearly unreturnable; only Yukimura and Tanegashima have successfully returned it. During the National Finals against Tezuka, Sanada combined Fire, Forest, and Lightning into one powerful return to defeat the Zero-Shiki serve.
Sanada has achieved Muga no Kyōchi, a state where he can intake and perfectly copy all techniques he sees. He was one of four players to achieve this before the series began. He also utilizes the Black Aura, which provides a significant power boost and allows him to hit shots that change direction mid-air. After a match with Tanegashima and Ryūji, Sanada learned to bend the Black Aura shot twice consistently, developing the Black Dragon Double Strike. In an anime-only match against American doubles pair Billy Cassidy and Michael Lee, Sanada performed the Tango Towards Destruction with Atobe Keigo, a doubles variation of Atobe's Rondo Towards Destruction.
At the U-17 camp, Sanada’s stats are Speed 4, Power 5, Stamina 4, Mental 5, and Technique 5. His power stems from extensive training, and his mental concentration, forged through iaido and Zen, is difficult for national-level opponents to match. However, maintaining ultimate techniques or the Muga state requires considerable stamina. Kurobe noted that Sanada’s physical ability far exceeds his mental willpower, though he possesses powers that transcend reason.
Sanada’s family includes his grandfather Genemon, a police officer and kendo master, his father, mother, older brother, and nephew Sasuke. His hobbies include muscle training, shogi, calligraphy, and Japanese instrumentals. He dislikes fads and electric standing motorcycles. His favorite foods are nameko mushroom miso soup and meat, particularly pork loin. He prefers black and gray colors and spends his allowance on savings rather than purchases. He often visits the Japanese-style room on campus for calligraphy practice and values modesty in people.
