Description
Kanata Irie is a third-year high school student and a key figure at the U-17 Japanese national training camp. Originally from Kyoto, he attended Maikozaka Middle School before advancing to the affiliated high school, where he also served as the student council vice-president. At the camp, he is first introduced as the leader of Court 3, but this position is a deliberate placement by the coaches. Similar to his associate Oni Juujiro, Irie is significantly stronger than the court he is assigned to; his true skill level is among the highest in the camp, and it has been suggested that he was originally a member of the elite first string.

Characterized by his distinctive appearance, Irie has curly, light blonde or strawberry blonde hair, red eyes, and wears large round glasses. His physical measurements are inconsistently recorded, with official sources listing his height as both 178 cm and 165 cm, and his weight as 66 kg and 55 kg, reflecting a slender build. On the surface, he behaves with a calm, gentle, and polite demeanor, often being one of the few high schoolers who is openly kind and approachable to the younger middle school players. However, this friendly exterior masks a deeply analytical and manipulative nature. Irie is a self-described "black-hearted" individual who possesses an unparalleled ability to read the psychology and intentions of others.

His primary and most notable ability on the tennis court is his masterful acting. Irie is a consummate performer who uses his exceptional acting skills to control the flow of a match. He often begins a game by pretending to be overwhelmed, panicked, or far outclassed by his opponent, only to reveal his true strength at the most critical moment, often with the phrase "Just kidding". This psychological warfare is designed to shatter an opponent's confidence by giving them false hope before effortlessly demolishing them. While this tactic can appear arrogant, his primary motivation is rarely to simply humiliate. Instead, he aims to test the limits of other players and, most importantly, to foster the growth and evolution of promising underclassmen. He displays genuine happiness when players like Keigo Atobe or Kazuya Tokugawa overcome challenges and develop new techniques.

This dedication to nurturing others is central to his role in the story. Irie is deeply invested in the development of Kazuya Tokugawa, having worked alongside Oni Juujiro to train him and even intervening to protect him from a dangerous attack by another player. His most significant relationship, however, is with Keigo Atobe. In a pivotal team shuffle match, Irie deliberately toys with Atobe, allowing him to take a commanding lead before effortlessly closing the gap. He pushes Atobe to his physical and mental limits, forcing him to unleash a new, powerful technique called Atobe Kingdom. Although Irie could have easily won, he feigns an injury to end the match in a draw, later admitting that while he was the stronger player, Atobe's will to win was greater. This act was a calculated move to witness and encourage Atobe's evolution. This theme continues as they are later paired as a doubles team, where Irie once again holds back, allowing them to lose decisively against a pair from the German team, presumably to further catalyze Atobe's growth.

As an athlete, Irie is a left-handed all-rounder with a unique set of statistics. His official stats are rated highly in Mental (7/5), Technique (6/5), and Speed (6/5), but very low in Power (1/5) and Stamina (2/5). This reflects his reliance on insight and psychological manipulation rather than brute strength or long, grueling rallies. His playing style is to deconstruct the opponent's game using his high-level "Insight" technique, which allows him to see an opponent's blind spots and aim for them with precision. Notably, despite his low stamina rating, he has shown the capacity to engage in incredibly long matches, such as a tie-break against Atobe that extended past 187 points, highlighting the deceptive nature of his abilities. His abilities are so respected that even the camp's second-ranked player, Shuuji Tanegashima, a former middle school classmate, actively avoids playing against him.

Outside of tennis, Irie has a rich personal life. He is a skilled tenor saxophone player who often practices on the camp's balcony at night, a hobby that sometimes disturbs his fellow集训 members. His interests include people-watching, which feeds into his analytical skills, and he has a stated dislike for highly intuitive people who might be able to see through his acting. He comes from a family of six, including his parents, an older sister, and a younger sister. He enjoys sweet foods like chocolate chip cookies and cream puffs and has a talent for carrying four plates at once and baking bread, skills that hint at a part-time job as a waiter.
