Description
Jujiro Oni is an eighteen-year-old third-year high school student and a key member of Japan's U-17 World Cup team. He is ranked as the number five representative of Japan and is a core member of the elite group known as the Genius 10. Oni stands an imposing 187 centimeters tall, weighs 83 kilograms, and has a muscular build befitting his powerful playing style. His most distinguishing physical features are his long, dark red hair, his generally rugged and intimidating expression, and noticeably jagged canine teeth, which contribute to his oni or demon-like nickname.
Despite his fearsome appearance, Oni has a deeply caring and chivalrous personality, often acting as a reliable older brother figure to younger players. He is known as the Gatekeeper of Hell, a title he earned as the master of the fifth court at the U-17 training camp. Although his skill level is among the highest in Japan, he deliberately chose to remain on the lower-ranked fifth court to mentor and challenge up-and-coming players, aiming to raise the overall level of the national team. His primary motivation for becoming the best tennis player in Japan stems from a promise he made to children at a local welfare center he frequently visits; he wants to see the happy looks on their faces when he achieves his goal. He has a surprisingly gentle side that includes a fondness for his pet hamster named Kaede and a hobby of making amigurumi crocheted stuffed animals, a skill he learned from the welfare center's director.
Oni's journey began two years before the main storyline when he entered the U-17 camp as a first-year. There, he engaged in a fierce match against the current team captain, Hoo Byodoin. Remembering the children who supported him, Oni was able to tap into a higher state of power, defeating Byodoin 7-6 and leaving a scar on his forehead. He remained undefeated as Japan's top player for a year before voluntarily stepping down from the number one spot to take on the role of a developer of players, becoming the Gatekeeper of Hell on the fifth court. In this role, he has been instrumental in the growth of players like Kazuya Tokugawa, whom he mentored alongside Kanata Irie. A significant part of his role at the camp was demonstrated when he played a placement match against middle schooler Takeshi Momoshiro. Oni used a racket strung with only two strings to easily win 6-0, showcasing a massive gap in power, though he also recognized and respected Momoshiro's tenacity. He later led the fifth court in a successful team shuffle match against the third court, personally winning the final tie-breaker to secure the promotion for his entire team.
Oni later officially reclaimed his position as the number five representative by easily defeating Kaji Kazena. In a badge match against the prodigious Kintaro Toyama, Oni was pushed to his limits. He helped guide Kintaro toward awakening the Pinnacle of Perfection, a state of ultimate tennis enlightenment, and in the process, rediscovered his own love for the game and achieved the same state to win the match. His relationship with Byodoin remains complex; while they are rivals who argue about their different methods of training, they share a deep mutual respect as two of Japan's strongest players. Even the rebellious Jin Akutsu has shown Oni immense respect, trusting him to decide the team's match lineup.
During the U-17 World Cup semifinal against Germany, Oni played the Singles 3 match against the German ace known as Q.P.. In a grueling contest, Oni suffered a fractured wrist but continued to fight purely on spirit and willpower, remembering Momoshiro's example of refusing to give up. Though he ultimately lost the match, his resilience and determination left a strong impression on his team.
Jujiro Oni is an all-rounder whose game is dominated by his overwhelming power. His signature techniques include the Jack Knife, a powerful backhand, and its much more devastating version, the Black Jack Knife, which is strong enough to shatter an opponent's racket and injure their wrist. He possesses incredible control and precision, exemplified by his ability to use a racket with only two strings to hit the sweet spot perfectly. He can also engage in high-intensity training rallies with multiple tennis balls at once, reaching up to ten balls. At his peak, Oni can access the Pinnacle of Perfection, a legendary state of enlightenment where he plays for the pure joy of the game, which dramatically enhances his already formidable power and speed.
