Description
Shuichiro Oishi is the vice-captain of Seishun Academy's tennis team, renowned nationally as one half of the "Golden Pair" doubles partnership with Eiji Kikumaru. His deep concern for the team's welfare earned him the nickname "Mother of Seigaku," exemplified when he injured his wrist rescuing a pregnant woman, causing him to miss a tournament match; he stayed with her at the hospital until her husband arrived.
Oishi balances calm rationality with flashes of intense passion, notably adopting the strict persona "Yakiniku Magistrate" when grilling meat. He displays strong leadership and tactical discipline on court, contrasting his typically gentle demeanor. Off-court, he maintains proper etiquette, enjoys romance novels and movies, frequents aquariums for dates, practices astronomy, and keeps fish. He fears thunder and pollen and possesses the unusual skill of determining young birds' gender. Academically strong in English but weak in math, he aspires to become a doctor.
As a right-handed counter-puncher specializing in doubles, Oishi's signature techniques are the Moon Volley (a high-precision topspin lob) and the Drop Volley (a feint resembling a drop shot). With Kikumaru, he developed key formations: Australian Formation (aligning on the center line), I-Formation (Kikumaru crouching at net during serves), and Oishi Territory (Oishi controlling the net while Kikumaru covers baseline). Their advanced Synchronization (Synchro) technique allows them to move as one unit, debuted during Nationals against Hyotei (where Kikumaru forfeited to protect Oishi's injured wrist) and later mastered to defeat Rikkai's Marui and Jackal.
Oishi defeated Kikumaru in a first-year singles match, prompting Kikumaru to propose their doubles partnership. During Nationals, he sacrificed his wrist against captain Kunimitsu Tezuka to spare him post-rehabilitation ranking matches.
In the U-17 narrative, Oishi was invited to the Japan U-17 Camp as an All-Japan Junior candidate. After losing a tie-break singles match to Kikumaru, he was eliminated but rejoined by climbing a mountain under the Drunken Coach. During the camp revolution, he partnered with Masaharu Niou against the Mutsu twins (No. 15 & 16). Niou used his "Illusion" to impersonate Kikumaru, enabling Synchro with Oishi. Niou then synchronized as a "triplet" with the twins, allowing Oishi to exploit their positioning with Oishi Territory for victory, earning Oishi the No. 16 badge.
At the U-17 World Cup, Oishi initially played doubles with Tsukimitsu Ochi against Greece. Heracles exploited Oishi's vulnerability by blocking sunlight to obscure his vision. Though they deployed Oishi Territory to force lobs for Ochi's Mach serves, Oishi sustained an injury against Thalatta Hercules. This led to his replacement by Yushi Oshitari and transition to the medical team staff. Earlier, he drew lottery slots to determine Japan's initial tournament positions.
Oishi's family includes his father (a tax officer), mother, younger sister, and uncle Akitaka (a doctor who treated Tezuka's arm injury). His surname Ōishi combines "big" and "stone," while his given name Shūichirō combines "excellent," "one," and "son."
