Description
Berg Katse serves as the primary field commander of the terrorist organization Galactor, acting as the second-in-command directly under the alien entity known as Sosai X. Katse is a central antagonist, personally overseeing the organization's operations in nearly every episode and serving as the archenemy of the Science Ninja Team.

The origin of Berg Katse is directly tied to Sosai X, who created this unique being to lead his campaign for world domination. Katse was born from the fusion of fraternal twins while still in the womb, a process that combined both male and female genetic material into a single individual. As a result of this gestalt origin, Katse possesses a cyclical hermaphroditic nature, meaning the ability to shift between male and female forms, a transformation that eventually comes under conscious control in adulthood. This dual composition also grants Katse exceptional physical and mental capabilities, including superhuman strength—possessing twice the muscle density of a typical human—and a remarkably high IQ measured at 280 or higher due to the fusion of two brains.

In terms of appearance, Katse is most recognizable in the standard Galactor commander uniform: a purple bodysuit with a matching mask featuring long, cat-like ears, a flowing purple cape with a red interior, red boots and gloves, and noticeable lipstick. When unmasked, Katse has an effeminate appearance with long, dark blonde hair and grayish-blue eyes. Throughout the series, Katse demonstrates a mastery of disguise, seamlessly impersonating both men and women of various ages, from elderly people to young professionals, with such perfection that even advanced technology and close acquaintances can be fooled. The only telltale sign of these disguises is a woman's ring that Katse always wears, a detail that the Science Ninja Team eventually learns to look for.

Personality-wise, Berg Katse is characterized by volatile dark mood swings that can escalate to hysteria, particularly when missions fail. Katse harbors a deep-seated hatred for a world that rejected their unusual nature, believing that helping Sosai X conquer the planet is a form of justice. This bitterness is balanced by intense loyalty to Sosai X, as Galactor represents the only place where Katse was ever accepted without prejudice. In command, Katse is brutal and merciless, readily condemning subordinates to death for betrayal or laziness, yet also known to be cowardly when facing personal danger, frequently escaping capture while leaving troops behind.

As a fighter, Berg Katse is highly skilled, capable of engaging multiple opponents simultaneously and holding their own against the entire Gatchaman team even when the heroes are equipped with all their advanced gear. Katse also commands a personal flying saucer, piloting it with such expertise that the team's God Phoenix fighter cannot give chase. When operating in female form, Katse takes on the persona of a mysterious and charismatic female commander, often leading Galactor's special female forces and displaying a colder, more calculating intelligence than the male persona sometimes exhibits.

The relationship with Sosai X forms the core of Katse's motivation and ultimate tragedy. Throughout much of the series, X appears to value Katse as a prized subordinate, offering counsel when Katse is troubled and dispatching rescue units when danger threatens, claiming he cannot lose his best commander. This apparent care makes the final revelation all the more devastating. In the series' climax, Katse learns that Sosai X was merely using them as a disposable pawn, with no genuine intention of sharing power or sparing the Earth. Confronted with the truth that their entire existence was manipulated and that they were considered nothing more than a freak of nature, Berg Katse chooses suicide, jumping into a pit of lava rather than continuing to live with this knowledge.

Berg Katse's development across the series traces a path from a confident, ruthless commander relishing victory and fearing only the wrath of Sosai X, to a figure of profound tragedy whose loyalty was exploited from the very beginning. The character's unique nature as a gender-shifting being created from fused twins, combined with their exceptional abilities and ultimately heartbreaking fate, establishes Katse as a complex and memorable antagonist whose personal tragedy is as central to the story as their villainous actions.
