Edwin Neal

Description
Edwin Neal is an American actor and voice actor born on July 12, 1945, in Houston, Texas. He began his career studying at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, before attending the University of Texas at Austin for acting and directing. While a student, he auditioned for and won the role of the hitchhiker in the 1974 cult classic film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a performance that remains a significant part of his legacy.

In the realm of anime voice acting, Neal is closely associated with ADV Films, the production company behind many English dubs in the 1990s and 2000s. He performed a substantial number of roles for the company, often providing voices for multiple characters within a single series. A notable early achievement was his work on the ADV dub of the original Gatchaman series, where he provided 26 distinct voices across all 103 episodes, including the primary antagonist Berg Katse. He later reprised the role of Berg Katse in the Gatchaman OVA and film.

His extensive filmography includes a wide range of characters. He voiced the villainous Dr. Robotnik, as well as the President and Metal Robotnik, in the 1996 OVA Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. He took on the role of Gai in the Getter Robo: Armageddon OVA series. In the comedy series Moeyo Ken, he voiced the character Nekomaru, a performance described by some as being inspired by comedian Paul Lynde. He is also credited with the role of Professor Gil Ramsey in the Shuten Doji series. Other notable voice credits in anime include roles in Lost Universe as Roy Glen, Ninja Resurrection as Mori Soiken, Soul Hunter as Lisei, Jing: King of Bandits as the Emcee, and Mazinkaiser as Nuke and Dr. Morimori. He also provided voices for numerous additional characters in series such as Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Devil Lady, GetBackers, and Wedding Peach.

Beyond these specific credits, Neal's voice work often saw him collaborate with a recurring group of voice actors based in Texas, including Bill Wise and Charles C. Campbell, who also frequently worked on ADV Productions. His role as Nekomaru in Moeyo Ken was significant enough to warrant his inclusion in a DVD commentary track for the series.

His contributions to anime dubbing have been recognized with industry accolades. In 2015, he received a Behind The Voice Actors Award for Best Male Supporting Vocal Performance in an Anime Movie/Special for his role as Berg Katse in the English dub of the Gatchaman film. In addition to his voice work, Neal has had an extensive career in live-action film and television and has provided voices for numerous video games, such as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and DC Universe Online. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor in 1969.
