TV-Series
Description
Hooty, designated G-5, is a core member of the Science Ninja Team. While the other members are often identified by bird names, Hooty is also known as Ryu the Horned Owl, with his civilian name being Ryu Nakanishi.
Hooty’s background is rooted in a fishing village. As a boy, he and other young men from his community assisted Dr. Nambu’s research team. When Nambu’s boat was caught in a whirlpool, a thirteen-year-old Hooty helped rescue him. Nambu later stayed at the Nakanishi home to recover, and Hooty expressed a wish to see Utoland City. The doctor kept his word and helped him move there, where Hooty was given a job and eventually recruited to the Science Ninja Team due to his expertise in oceanic matters. When not on a mission, he manages a yacht harbor, which serves as a cover for the team’s operations, as the God Phoenix is hidden in the waters below his nearly customer-less business.
In appearance, Hooty is large and heavily built, with a somewhat overweight frame that is said to consist mostly of muscle. He has shoulder-length, messy brown hair and brown eyes. His casual clothing is simple, often a green and yellow t-shirt with the number five on it, paired with khaki pants. As G-5, his brown Bird Style features a green feathered cape with deep red trim. His helmet is green with yellow eye markings, an orange beak piece, and a lavender visor.
Personality-wise, Hooty is the most laid-back member of the Science Ninja Team. He is easygoing, physically strong, and highly empathetic, often serving as a foil to more cynical teammates like Joe the Condor. While usually optimistic, he is not without flaws and can show arrogance or a violent temper when provoked. Initially, Hooty does not share the same fervent passion for fighting Galactor as the others; he sometimes complains about his role, particularly the frustration of rarely getting to fight on the front lines as he is often left to pilot the God Phoenix. Despite his grumbling, he never truly wants to abandon the team and is loyal to his comrades, especially when he realizes that they value him despite his perceived shortcomings.
Hooty’s primary role within the team is that of the pilot. He is the one entrusted with flying the team’s primary vehicle, the God Phoenix, as well as later crafts like the New God Phoenix and the Gatchaspartan. His expertise in marine sports and his family’s background in fishing make him uniquely suited for operations on and under the water. Outside of the main ship, he also pilots his own personal mecha. In Gatchaman II, he uses the Horned Tank, an armored amphibious vehicle equipped with missile turrets and submarine propellers. In Gatchaman Fighter, he pilots the Gatcha Five, a yellow and white bulldozer mech with clawed arms and rockets for flight, which forms the main engine, rear wheels, and rear wings of the combined Gatchaspartan.
