Description
Jinpei, designated G-4 and known as the Swallow, is the youngest member of the Science Ninja Team. His origins are rooted in a mysterious past, as he was discovered as a toddler by his adoptive sister Jun in the Jupiter Mountains. Jun found him while she was fleeing from the war-torn region and brought him to the Shirayuki Orphanage, where they were raised together. He later claims to be the last descendant of the Iga Ninja clan, with hints suggesting he may be the sole surviving son of the Jupiter Ninja Clan's sensei, though this aspect of his history is never fully confirmed. Jinpei and Jun were eventually recruited by Dr. Nambu to join the elite Science Ninja Team. According to some sources, the professor initially did not intend to take both children, but the pair insisted on staying together, making their joint recruitment a package deal.
In terms of personality, Jinpei is a complex blend of cheerful mischief and a genuine sense of responsibility. He is often the source of comic relief within the team, displaying an excitable, prankish, and sometimes foul-mouthed nature typical of a child his age. Despite his youth, he takes his duties seriously and is shown to be remarkably mature in certain contexts. For instance, he helps Jun run her snack bar, Snack J, where he works as a cook and dishwasher and even nags teammate Ken about his unpaid tab, revealing a shrewd, business-like side. He has a well-known habit of bringing home stray animals, a tendency that sometimes inadvertently triggers new missions for the team. A driving motivation for Jinpei is his desire to prove his worth. He is sensitive about not being taken seriously due to his small stature and age, which can lead him to act impulsively, stowing away on enemy vehicles or taking on missions alone to demonstrate his capabilities as an equal member of the team.
Within the team, Jinpei serves as the reconnaissance and infiltration expert. He leverages his small size, remarkable speed, and agility to gather intelligence in enemy territory, a role that often leads to him being underestimated by opponents. His key relationships define much of his character arc. His bond with Jun is the most significant; she is his adoptive older sister and primary caregiver, and he refers to her as "Oneechan." Although he relentlessly teases her, particularly about her feelings for Ken, she is the person he most often turns to for comfort in difficult times. He looks up to Ken Washio, the team's leader, as an older brother, calling him "Aniki," and shares a similar brotherly respect for Joe. Dr. Nambu acts as a paternal figure overseeing his education, while he often partners with Ryu for comedic relief and mischief.
Jinpei undergoes noticeable development throughout the series. Early episodes often focus on his feelings of being undervalued and his eagerness to prove himself. His ninja heritage and desire for connection with his past are explored in episodes focusing on Mount Jupiter. He also experiences moments of parental longing, seeking out mother and father figures on several occasions, which highlights his need for the family structure the Science Ninja Team provides.
Jinpei's notable abilities and equipment evolve across different series adaptations. His fighting style emphasizes stealth and incapacitation, using non-lethal tactics to offset his size disadvantage against adult opponents. His weaponry changes with each series: in the original Gatchaman, he wields American Clackers, which are bolas that can be fitted with blades or explosives. In Gatchaman II, he uses the Rebound Ball, a projectile thrown with a special mitt, and in Gatchaman Fighter, he employs the Swallow Top, a yo-yo-like spinning top weapon. For transportation, he pilots the Swallow Helico, a small VTOL aircraft designed for reconnaissance missions in tight spaces, and later operates the Gatcha Four tank, which can combine with the others to form the Gatcha Spartan. In the 1994 OVA, his design is modernized, and he is depicted as a self-taught hacker who uses an advanced collapsible device to infiltrate enemy computer systems, with data displayed on his helmet visor.
