Description
Hugh Mercury inherits the hereditary title of Silver Sugar Viscount and runs the Mercury Workshop, primarily located in Westol. This prestigious status grants him significant influence in the sugar confectionery world but confines him to crafting sweets solely for the royal family. He cuts a distinctive figure, often seen in formal attire comprising a long light green cape fastened with golden buttons over a dark green coat, white shirt, red sash, blue pants, and beige boots. For more casual settings, he favors a brown coat, white shirt, black pants, and the same boots.

Naturally sarcastic and provocative, Hugh exhibits blunt honesty concerning sugar artistry. He first crossed paths with Anne Halford, Jonas Anders, and their companions during their travels. After deliberately provoking the group, he offered to cover their inn expenses in exchange for preparing sweets. He critically evaluated their work, shattering both Anne’s and Jonas’s confections for lacking originality or displaying arrogance, yet he honored his payment promise.

Hugh values genuine talent and growth in sugar craftsmanship. Recognizing Anne’s potential early on, he consistently challenged her to forge a unique artistic voice beyond imitating her mother’s work. His influence proved crucial during the Lewiston Silver Sugar Master competition when his testimony before the king helped vindicate Anne’s integrity against Jonas’s false accusations. Following Jonas's exposure as a liar, Hugh delegated the decision on Jonas's punishment to Anne. He later invited Anne to join his workshop in Westol, an offer she declined.

His mentorship of Anne stems partly from recognizing parallels to his own constrained journey. He openly questioned whether she felt satisfied achieving only the Silver Sugar Master title, pushing her to seek accomplishments uniquely her own. His long-standing relationship with fellow master Alph Hingley, known as Kat, dates back to their youth and involves a complex history, including one incident where Hugh faked his death, subsequently leaving Kat in financial difficulty.

Beyond his professional life, Hugh maintains connections within the artisan community. He officiated the wedding ceremony for Anne and Challe Fen Challe, attended by numerous friends they made throughout their experiences. His birth date is November 11, aligning with the Scorpio zodiac sign.
