Description
In the anime Cosmowarrior Zero, Hellmatia (also spelled Helmatia) serves as a central antagonist and a high-ranking figure within the Cosmic Empire. Her true nature is that of a Metanoid, a member of an ancient and purely mechanical race that exists as the antithesis of organic life. In the hierarchy of the Cosmic Empire, she holds the position of an immensely powerful minister to the Cosmic Emperor, Zeth Vorder, acting as his trusted aide and the primary executor of his will across the conquered universe.

Hellmatias origins lie far from Earth on the planet Miraiseria, which faced imminent destruction from a solar catastrophe. She arrived on this world and, by convincing the influential man Zeth Vorder to undergo mechanization, set in motion a chain of events that would reshape the galaxy. Vorder successfully persuaded his entire world to convert into machines to survive, emerging as its tyrant. With Hellmatia perpetually at his side, he then embarked on a campaign of universal conquest, which ultimately led to the subjugation of Earth, the central setting for the storys main conflict.

While the Cosmic Empires actions are brutal and its methods are those of conquest, Hellmatias personal motivations appear more detached and clinical than purely evil. She observes the conflict and the reactions of organic beings with the demeanor of a scientist gathering valuable data. Her primary goal is not necessarily the extermination of all organic life but the collection of information on humanity for a higher authority. Throughout the events of Cosmowarrior Zero, she is satisfied to have retrieved what she considers good data on human behavior and resilience, which she plans to hand over to her superior, suggesting she operates as an agent or operative in a much larger, unseen scheme.

Hellmatia plays a pivotal role as the strategic enforcer of the Cosmic Empire. She is directly responsible for the environmental conditions that forced humanity into a losing war, deploying mechanized troops to conquer Earth. Her actions also have a profound personal impact on the protagonist, Captain Harlock, as she is involved in the mechanization of the crew of the Arcadia, turning them into zombie-like soldiers. Furthermore, she is linked to Marina Oki, the primary love interest of Captain Zero, as Marina is one of the Miraiserians who was compelled to undergo mechanization due to the events Hellmatia set in motion.

Despite serving as a major antagonist, Hellmatia does not meet a definitive end in the conventional sense. After the defeat of the Cosmic Empire, she does not fight to the death. Instead, she departs peacefully, satisfied with the observational data she has collected on humanity. This departure suggests a pragmatic nature, as she is willing to abandon a failed project to pursue her long-term objectives elsewhere.

Notable abilities possessed by Hellmatia stem directly from her nature as a Metanoid. As a purely mechanical being, she is not a human who was mechanized but rather a naturally occurring machine lifeform. This grants her immense power and a distinct form of immortality or resilience beyond that of the Empires other mechanized soldiers. She operates on a strategic level, orchestrating the fall of civilizations through manipulation and force, and her authority within the Empire is second only to the Emperor himself. Her existence is a core mystery of the series, representing a force of pure logic and data collection that uses conquest as a tool for understanding organic life.
