Description
Dr. Von Reichter is the main antagonist of the animated series Cybersix. He is a mad scientist whose origins are deeply rooted in the horrors of World War II. It is heavily implied, both through narrative context and visual cues, that he was a former member of the SS and the Nazi party, and further suggestions identify him as the infamous war criminal Josef Mengele. An expert in genetic engineering, he initially conducted gruesome experiments in concentration camps, attempting to implant cybernetic organs into deceased prisoners to reanimate them as soldiers. Following the defeat of the Nazi regime, Von Reichter fled to South America to continue his sinister work.
In personality, Von Reichter is portrayed as cruel, twisted, and utterly megalomaniacal. His driving motivation is a god-like ambition to replace all of humanity with artificial creatures of his own design, who would then hail him as their supreme leader. He plans to achieve this global conquest by first overtaking the fictional city of Meridiana, placing his creations in positions of political power. He is hellbent on the destruction of the titular character Cybersix, whom he views as his greatest failure. His obsession reaches a peak of spiteful fury when, after repeated defeats, he attempts to detonate a living bomb known as the Isle of Doom to destroy all of Meridiana simply to prove his power to the world.
Within the story, Von Reichter serves as the primary creator and driving force behind the series' conflicts. He is the "father" of Cybersix and her brother, Data 7, having created them as part of the Cyber series, a line of 5,000 genetically engineered children meant to be his perfect soldiers. When these creations developed free will and became disobedient at around nine years of age, he ordered their total extermination. Only Cybersix and her brother survived the purge; her brother’s brain was saved by Von Reichter and transplanted into the body of a black panther. Throughout the series, Von Reichter unleashes a constant stream of monsters, including Technos and Fixed Ideas, to recapture or kill his wayward creation, simultaneously providing her with the "sustenance" she needs to survive.
Key relationships define his role as an antagonist. His relationship with his clone son, José, is purely utilitarian; he treats José as nothing more than a disposable minion, scolding him for failures and showing no genuine paternal care. He is the archenemy of Cybersix, holding a complex view of her as both a disobedient tool to be eliminated and a remarkable creation whose courage he begrudgingly admires. Conversely, he considers Data 7 one of his finest creations, a loyal executioner whose mind was wiped. Von Reichter shows minimal development throughout the series, remaining a static embodiment of evil whose primary evolution is the escalation of his monstrous schemes, culminating in attempting to destroy an entire city out of frustrated malice.
His notable abilities lie not in physical combat but in his genius-level intellect in biogenetics and cybernetics. He can create a vast array of artificial lifeforms, from humanoid servants to powerful, monstrous entities like the werewolf that infected Cybersix’s love interest or a creature called The Eye, which could steal the minds of its victims. His scientific expertise is the source of all conflict in the series, as every monster and challenge Cybersix faces originates directly from his laboratory.
