Description
Doctor Shikishima is a central supporting character in the Gigantor universe, known in the original Japanese version of the story as Tetsujin 28-go. His background is deeply intertwined with the origin of the giant robot itself. He was a close colleague and assistant to Professor Haneda, the brilliant scientist who created the Tetsujin (Iron Man) series of robots as a secret weapon during the Second World War. During an Allied bombing raid on the laboratory, both Professor Haneda and Doctor Shikishima were believed to have been killed. However, Shikishima survived the attack and went into hiding, dedicating himself to protecting the legacy of his mentor's work.
Years later, he re-emerges to play a crucial role as a mentor and guardian to Shotaro Haneda, the young son of his deceased colleague. It is in partnership with Shotaro that Doctor Shikishima locates the most powerful robot of the series, Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor), before it can fall into the hands of criminals. Having witnessed the destructive potential of these war machines, he is instrumental in the decision to use the giant robot for the protection of peace rather than for warfare.
In terms of personality, Doctor Shikishima is defined by a calm, dedicated, and serious demeanor. He is deeply caring and responsible, particularly towards Shotaro, whose safety and development he takes very seriously. While his appearance is often serious and deadpan, reflecting the weight of his past and the gravity of his work, he is fundamentally a compassionate figure who acts as a stabilizing force in the young protagonist's life. In some iterations of the story, such as the 2004 series, his role as a surrogate father figure to Shotaro is even more pronounced, taking a direct hand in his daily care.
His primary role in the narrative is that of the robot's engineer and the team's scientific advisor. While young Shotaro controls Gigantor in the field, it is Doctor Shikishima who is responsible for repairing the robot when it sustains damage, developing new technologies to aid in their fight against crime, and providing strategic guidance. His key relationship is naturally with Shotaro, acting as his partner and guardian. He also works closely with Inspector Otsuka of the Tokyo police, forming a trusted alliance to combat the various criminal organizations and rogue robots they face. In the 1980s remake series, The New Adventures of Gigantor, he is part of a family unit, with a wife named Utako Shikishima and a daughter named Makiko Shikishima.
Across different adaptations, his core role remains consistent, though his backstory and circumstances may shift. For instance, in the original 1960s series, his history is firmly rooted in World War II, whereas the 1980 remake removes the direct WWII connection, portraying Professor Haneda as having left the robot to his adult son before dying. Regardless of the specific continuity, Doctor Shikishima's development is marked by his transition from a survivor of a tragic past hiding in the shadows to an active, vital partner in the fight for justice, using his scientific genius to enable Gigantor's heroic actions. His notable abilities lie not in physical combat, but in his profound expertise in robotics and engineering, which makes him indispensable for the maintenance and improvement of the titular giant robot.
