Description
Chappy is the protagonist of the 1972 anime series Mahōtsukai Chappy. She is a young witch who hails from a place called the Magic Land, a separate realm where she lives with her family, including her parents, her younger brother Jun, and her grandparents. Her family holds a noble status in their homeland, and they possess an exceptionally long surname: Hans Charles Grimm and Aesop Et Cetera. Despite her privileged upbringing, Chappy finds life in the Magic Land to be dull and is driven by a sense of rich boredom, feeling that her existence lacks excitement. She becomes fascinated by the human world, a place completely without magic, and this curiosity is the primary motivation for her journey.
Chappy possesses a personality that is gentle, kind, and soft-hearted, which quickly endears her to the people she meets in her new home. She is portrayed as a classic example of a cute witch, with a naive and somewhat dorky demeanor. Her love for nature and animals is a defining trait, and she is deeply disturbed by those who would harm the environment or be cruel to creatures, such as greedy businessmen or animal hunters. Her appearance typically features her hair tied up in girlish pigtails or buns, which complements her innocent blue eyes and doll-like features.
As a kid hero, Chappy's main role in the story involves using her magical abilities to solve problems for the residents of Nico Nico Town. Throughout the series, she mends personal relationships, helps bring criminals to justice, and works to protect the natural world. She is an amateur at casting spells, but her primary magical tools are a flying broomstick that once belonged to her grandmother, which she uses to travel to the human world, and a special baton or wand that she took from her grandfather. To activate her magic, she points her wand and chants the incantation "Abura Mahariku Maharita Kabura". Her younger brother, Jun, acts as a prankster and a sibling partner in mischief, and he possesses his own unique power of voluntary shapeshifting into different animals.
Chappy's key relationships are central to the narrative. In the human world, her closest friends are a tomboy named Michiko and a more traditionally girly girl named Shizuko. Her family also joins her in the human world, making her a rare example of a magical girl whose parents are present and actively involved in her life, rather than being absent or unaware. Her father and mother are happily married and work together to guide their children in a world where they must hide their true identities as outsiders. The family lives in constant fear of being found out, dealing with the pressures of being a fish out of water and risking persecution if their magical origins are discovered.
The character undergoes significant development, particularly in the series finale. After using her magic publicly to save a young boy's life, she accidentally reveals her and her family's secret. The consequences are severe, as they are forced to leave their beloved home and friends. The Good King of the Magic Land, while understanding she meant well, decrees that the family must exile themselves and that the memories of everyone they met will be erased to protect the Magic Land's secrecy. Overwhelmed with guilt and despair, Chappy runs to the beach and attempts to drown herself, though her parents find and save her in time. This dark moment highlights the immense emotional toll of her actions and the bittersweet nature of her adventure.
