Description
Non is the primary rival and antagonist in the anime Majokko Megu-chan. She is a young witch from the Magic Land who, alongside Megu, is chosen as a candidate for the next queen of the magical realm. Both are sent to Earth in order to learn about the human world, and the one who gains greater understanding is to be regarded as the new queen. Non is formally named Non Gou, and she stands as Megu's main contender for the crown.
In terms of personality, Non is depicted as a cold and distant figure, almost devoid of emotion. She is an alien being in the sense that she is largely detached from the warmth and vulnerability that characterize human relationships. Her demeanor is stern, calculating, and ruthless. From the very beginning, Non establishes herself as a serious threat; she attempts to murder Megu during their first encounter and continues to plague her throughout the series with schemes and direct confrontations. This antagonistic role sets a precedent for later magical girl rivalries in the genre.
Non's primary motivation is her desire to win the throne of the Magic Land. She views Megu as a direct obstacle and competitor, and much of her early actions are driven by the need to eliminate or surpass her rival. However, as the story progresses, her motivations become more complex. She is not simply a one-dimensional villain; her coldness masks a powerful and disciplined sorceress who is deeply committed to her own path.
Her role in the story is that of a foil to Megu. Where Megu is impulsive, warm-hearted, and learning to embrace human emotions, Non remains reserved, detached, and initially holds human feelings in contempt. She serves as a constant source of conflict and challenge, pushing Megu to grow stronger both in magical ability and in character. Non is also involved in battles against monsters, demons, and other sorcerers, and on several occasions, she sets aside her rivalry with Megu to join forces against greater mutual enemies, such as the demonic witch-queen Saturn and her henchman Chou-san.
The key relationship in Non's life is with Megu. It begins as pure enmity, with Non trying to kill her rival. Over time, however, Non comes to develop a grudging respect for Megu's innate courage and determination. While true friendship never fully blossoms between them, their dynamic evolves into something more nuanced: a rivalry tempered by mutual acknowledgment of each other's strength. In several episodes, Non and Megu cooperate against common threats, showing that Non is capable of putting aside her ambitions when a larger danger arises.
Non's development throughout the series is subtle but significant. She starts as a nearly emotionless adversary, but her experiences on Earth and her repeated clashes with Megu force her to confront the value of human connections and the complexity of feelings. She does not undergo a complete transformation into a warm character, but she does show moments of vulnerability and altruism that hint at a deeper capacity for change. Her growth is marked by a gradual, grudging respect for her rival and a slight thawing of her icy exterior.
In terms of notable abilities, Non is described as one of the most powerful sorcerers of the Witch-World. She possesses considerable magical prowess, which she uses both in direct combat and in elaborate schemes to sabotage Megu. Her magical skill is on par with or even exceeds Megu's in certain areas, making her a formidable opponent. Physically, she is characterized by blue hair and blue skin, a distinctive appearance that sets her apart from the more human-looking Megu. Her abilities are often displayed in duels and magical confrontations, and she is a disciplined and calculating user of magic, rarely relying on raw emotion but rather on precise and powerful spellcasting.
