Description
Kazumi Onimaru is a character who first appears in Cardfight!! Vanguard G: NEXT as the main antagonist before transitioning into a secondary protagonist in Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Z. He was forcibly subjected to a Diffride, a possession by the unit Stealth Dragon, Shiranui, which controlled his body and actions for a significant period until the final episode of NEXT. His physical appearance is notable, featuring long, very light blond or white hair tied in a ponytail and yellow eyes. His typical attire consists of a black jacket over a red shirt.
The personality of Kazumi is complex and initially masked by Shiranui's control. Under the influence of the possessing unit, he exhibited a gentle but sinister and ruthless demeanor in combat, looking down on weaker opponents. However, Kazumi's true personality is very different and is revealed after his possession ends. He is genuinely a caring and compassionate individual, who feels deep remorse for the actions he was forced to commit while possessed. He also feels he was too weak to have helped Shiranui, showing a sense of regret over the entire situation. In stark contrast to the menacing figure he was during the Diffride, his authentic self is charismatic and gentlemanly, similar to the persona Shiranui initially adopted when meeting the protagonist Chrono Shindou.
Kazumi's primary motivation is driven by his personal connections and a desire for redemption. His most significant relationship is with his younger step-brother, Kazuma Shouji. A core goal for Kazumi is to connect with and protect Kazuma, from whom he was estranged. When the Apostles of Gyze begin targeting specific Cardfighters to become a vessel for the destructive deity Gyze, Kazuma becomes one of their targets. This leads Kazumi to stay by his brother's side to shield him from the Apostles. His role shifts from a villain to a guardian, and he later becomes a brief bodyguard for Chrono Shindou when Chrono is also at risk of becoming Gyze's vessel. His deep care for his brother ultimately defines his actions, leading him to confront Gyze himself in an attempt to save Kazuma.
In the story, Kazumi's role evolves dramatically. Initially introduced as a formidable and mysterious enemy who easily defeats Chrono, he is later revealed to be an unwilling pawn. After being freed from Shiranui, he becomes an ally, providing crucial information about Gastille's plans to revive Gyze. Throughout G: Z, he is a consistent defender of Kazuma and later Chrono. His development is marked by his transition from a victim of possession to a proactive hero who fights for his family. A pivotal moment occurs when he loses a Cardfight against Gyze, who is possessing Kazuma. Despite his defeat and being seriously wounded, he does not give up, realizing through visions of past memories that his brother never hated him. This realization strengthens his resolve, and he entrusts the mission of saving Kazuma to Chrono and his friends. In the end, after Gyze is defeated, Kazumi is finally reunited with his brother, achieving his primary goal.
Kazumi is a skilled Cardfighter who primarily uses a deck from the Nubatama clan, which focuses on stealth dragon themes. While under Shiranui's control, he was known for employing a destructive strategy centered on hand destruction. As the narrative progresses, he utilizes the clan's ability known as Domination, which allows him to take control of an opponent's units. His key avatar units are various forms of Shiranui, including Blazing Demon Stealth Dragon, Shiranui "Zanki" and Evil-eye Vidya Emperor, Shiranui "Rinne". He demonstrates high-level proficiency, having been an undefeated champion of the Under 20 Championship before the events of the series.
