Description
Momotaro is a character from the anime Hozuki's Coolheadedness, based on the classic Japanese folk hero of the same name. He appears as a pretentious, old-fashioned samurai spirit who is deeply proud of his past accomplishments as a human. This pride makes him easily angered when insulted, and he often carries himself with an air of arrogance. His motivations are tied to his sense of honor and his desire to be respected for his legendary status as a demon-hunting samurai.

In the story, Momotaro serves as a supporting character who works as the assistant to Hakutaku, a Chinese medicine expert who is Hozuki's main rival. Initially, Momotaro and his three animal companions—Shiro the dog, Kakisuke the monkey, and Rurio the pheasant—are shown rampaging in Hell before being offered employment by Hozuki. After this, Momotaro settles into a role at Togenkyo, changing his attire from the clothes he wore in life to reflect his new position. He and his animal companions become regular figures in the bureaucracy of the afterlife. His key relationships include his close bond with his three animal pets, who often work alongside him, and his professional connection to Hakutaku, whom he serves loyally.

Over the course of the series, Momotaro experiences some development from a rampaging, prideful folk hero into a more settled worker in the underworld, though he retains his old-fashioned mannerisms and quick temper. His notable abilities stem from his background as a famous samurai in life, making him a skilled fighter. His three animal companions each bring their own talents to their group, with the animal trio later finding work as torturers in the animal cruelty section of Hell.
