Description
Daisuke Hirakawa is a veteran Japanese voice actor and singer born on June 4, 1973, in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. He has been active in the industry since 1997 and currently works as a freelancer. He is also known by the pseudonym Tatsuya Hirai for some of his roles.
Hirakawa is a graduate of the 11th term of the Katsuta Voice Actor Academy. His debut in voice acting was in uncredited roles for the film dub of Seven Years in Tibet. For much of his early career, he focused on dubbing foreign films and television series. He is notably the official Japanese dubbing voice for actors Orlando Bloom and Tom Hiddleston, providing the Japanese voice for Bloom's characters Legolas in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
Hirakawa's transition to anime voice work became more prominent around 2004, with his role as Baron Franz d'Épinay in Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. Since then, he has built a prolific career known for his wide vocal range. He has portrayed a diverse array of characters, from kind-hearted young men to charismatic geniuses and even cold-blooded antagonists, earning respect from fans for his versatility.
Throughout his career, Hirakawa has taken on a vast number of roles. Some of his most notable and widely recognized performances include the calculating Noriaki Kakyoin in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, the passionate Rei Ryugazaki in the Free! series, and the manipulative Laito Sakamaki in the Diabolik Lovers franchise. He also brought to life the controversial Makoto Ito in School Days, the brilliant Naoki Irie in Itazura na Kiss, and the enigmatic Enmu in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train. His filmography includes other major roles such as Frankenstein in Noblesse, Shu Hagiwara in Domestic Girlfriend, and Bernhard von Schneider in Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These.
In addition to his anime work, Hirakawa is a mainstay in the world of video games and drama CDs. He has voiced characters in popular game franchises such as Rufus Albarea in The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Saint-Germain in Code:Realize, and Sampo Koski in Honkai: Star Rail. He was formerly affiliated with the agency Media Force until its bankruptcy in 2014, after which he became a freelancer.
In October 2023, Hirakawa announced he was taking a temporary hiatus from work to receive treatment for sudden hearing loss. He was discharged from the hospital in November of the same year and has since resumed his activities while managing his health.
