Description
Hiroki Shinohara is a 24-year-old officer in the United Nations Cosmo Navy who serves as the deputy commander of the fighter squadron aboard the space battleship Yamato during its voyage to the planet Iscandar in 2199. A native of Tochigi Prefecture, he holds the rank of Ensign, which is equivalent to a Third-grade Space Lieutenant, and acts as the second-in-command to Lieutenant Saburo Kato. His call sign within the squadron is Charlie 01.

At first glance, Shinohara presents an image that contrasts with his true nature. With his long hair and casual, easygoing manner of speaking, he can appear frivolous or flashy. However, this exterior belies a remarkably reasonable, level-headed, and dependable young man. He is known for his ability to calmly and openly accept unexpected developments, and he rarely, if ever, shows the darker aspects of his past or personal struggles. While he possesses an even temper and a friendly disposition, he is not hesitant in combat and is willing to place himself in harm's way to protect the ship and his comrades. A notable personal fear is a reluctance for high diving, an activity that makes him uncomfortable.

As the deputy flight leader, Shinohara’s primary role is to support and back up Kato, a role for which he is exceptionally well-suited. He is often seen covering for the more rigid and straightforward Kato, as well as helping to temper the more aggressive tendencies of his fellow pilot, Akira Yamamoto. His ability to easily adapt to his surroundings and follow along makes him a brilliant right-hand man and a peacekeeper within the mostly male fighter squadron. He is a skilled pilot in his own right and is ready to enter dangerous situations to complete his objectives. Outside the cockpit, he has proven his resourcefulness in combat, such as when he and Yamamoto improvised an artillery piece from a disassembled fighter's machine gun to repel a boarding party.

Shinohara’s most significant relationship is with his commanding officer, Saburo Kato. He shares a natural rapport with Kato, holding deep respect for him and placing complete trust in his leadership. Kato, in turn, relies on Shinohara as a trusted subordinate who always has his back. His other close tie on the Yamato is with Akira Yamamoto. Shinohara’s relaxed and open attitude allows the two to talk easily with one another, and he is often there to provide quiet support or pray alongside her during difficult times. While he appears to harbor romantic feelings for her, he largely keeps them hidden or expresses them indirectly until a late point in the voyage, where a clumsy attempt to embrace her at a wedding reception is aggressively rejected.

Shinohara’s background includes a difficult relationship with his father, who was frequently dissatisfied and angry with him. His father was killed in the early wave of planet bombings that devastated Earth, and after his death, Shinohara’s hatred faded, replaced by a sense of loss and a tendency to remember him. This experience contributes to his composed and understanding nature, and he has used it to offer counsel to others, such as when he helped Kato overcome his reluctance to communicate with his own father during the ship's final departure from the solar system. Despite his easygoing exterior, he is a dedicated professional who inherited the callsign Sword 3 from a pilot he admired, Akira Yamamoto's father. Shinohara develops from a character who quietly manages the flight team's dynamics into one who consistently proves his reliability and courage in the face of the immense dangers of the voyage to Iscandar and back.
