Description
Kōji Tanaka is the second Ajin confirmed to exist in Japan. His life changed dramatically after his discovery, as he was captured by the government and subjected to over a decade of brutal human experimentation. This prolonged abuse, in which he was killed countless times for research, instilled in him a deep and burning hatred for the authorities and for humanity at large. His rescue by the terrorist leader Satō became a turning point, and he subsequently joined Satō’s group, serving as his second-in-command and a key enforcer of the Ajin terrorist agenda.

Physically, Tanaka is a tall man with broad shoulders and small, piercing eyes. Despite his imposing appearance, his personality is more complex than a simple brute. He harbors a genuine resentment toward those who persecuted him, but he is not a natural-born killer. His conscience occasionally surfaces, as seen when he hesitated to execute a defenseless woman who pleaded for her life. This inner conflict shows that beneath the trauma and rage, Tanaka retains a core of decency. His motivations are rooted in a desire for revenge against the system that tortured him and a belief in Satō’s vision of an Ajin-dominated world where his kind no longer suffers. However, he is not blindly fanatical; he sometimes questions plans that seem too reckless or morally questionable.

In the story, Tanaka plays a central role as a frontline soldier in Satō’s terrorist operations, leading missions and providing muscle when needed. His relationship with Satō is one of deep loyalty—he views Satō as his savior and follows orders without hesitation. This loyalty is tested later when Satō betrays him, eventually causing Tanaka to leave the group and shift his allegiances. His relationship with other Ajin, especially Kei Nagai, is antagonistic, as he sees Kei as a traitor who sides with humans instead of fighting for Ajin liberation.

Tanaka’s character undergoes significant development over the course of the anime. Initially a bitter and vengeful pawn, he gradually becomes disillusioned with Satō’s extreme methods and his own role as a tool for destruction. This conflict leads to a breaking point after the betrayal, forcing him to reevaluate his path and ultimately step away from the terrorist cause. His growth is marked by a struggle between his trauma-driven desire for retribution and his lingering humanity.

Notable abilities include the power to manifest an Invisible Black Matter (IBM), commonly called a black ghost. Tanaka’s IBM is distinct in that it is obedient and capable of speech, unlike many others. He also demonstrates resilience from years of repeated death, a practical familiarity with combat, and a determined work ethic—he famously overcame his poor marksmanship through rigorous training. While not as strategically brilliant as Satō, Tanaka is a durable and relentless fighter who uses his immortality to full effect in direct confrontations.
