Description
Raito Sakamaki, also commonly romanized as Laito Sakamaki, is the fifth son of the Sakamaki household and the youngest of the triplet brothers born to Cordelia and the Vampire King Karlheinz. He is a second-year student at Ryoutei Academy and appears as a seventeen-year-old vampire with short brown hair and green eyes. His birthday is March 20 and his blood type is O; he has a fondness for macarons and enjoys solving crossword puzzles.
Raito's background is marked by severe abuse and psychological damage. His mother Cordelia raised him in a deeply distorted manner, treating their relationship as an intimate one rather than a mother-son bond. This abnormal upbringing caused Raito to view his mother as a lover figure and to develop an obsessive, jealous attachment to her. When his father discovered the nature of the relationship, Raito was locked away in a basement. During that time Cordelia visited him and coldly revealed that she had only been using him, a confession that shattered his sense of reality. Raito later conspired with his brother Ayato to kill their mother, and when Cordelia was attacked and ran to him for help, he pushed her off a balcony. This act left him with a permanently twisted set of values that continues to shape his behavior.
In terms of personality, Raito is an extreme sadist who presents himself as cheerful, playful, and flirtatious. He enjoys joking and teasing others, yet his demeanor can shift suddenly into something cold and frightening, especially when his wishes are opposed or when someone defies him. He takes pleasure in seeing others uncomfortable or distressed, and he deliberately uses mocking nicknames, referring to the protagonist Yui Komori as Bitch-chan as a form of verbal abuse. Beneath his surface charm lies deep trauma, emotional instability, and a distorted understanding of love, which he tends to treat as a game of possession and control rather than genuine affection.
His motivations are driven by the complicated feelings he still holds for Cordelia and by a need to feel loved and wanted. He becomes obsessively jealous of anyone who gets close to someone he claims as his own, and much of his behavior stems from the fear of being unloved and the twisted way he learned to express desire. In the story, he fills the role of one of the principal antagonistic forces in the Sakamaki mansion, tormenting Yui alongside his brothers. He constantly tests and humiliates her, though over time he develops an interest in her that extends beyond her blood, even if he continues to frame his attachment in possessive and sadistic terms.
Raito's relationships with his family are central to understanding him. His bond with Cordelia is the most warped, blending perceived love with betrayal and hatred, and he remains unable to forget the mother he killed. Among his triplet brothers, he shares a relatively decent relationship with Kanato, as both harbor obsessive love for their mother, while his relationship with Ayato is strained whenever the subject of Cordelia arises, though the two can interact normally under ordinary circumstances. He rarely engages with his half-brothers Shu and Reiji, though he occasionally recommends strange CDs to Shu, and he regards his younger half-brother Subaru as naive and easy to provoke. His interactions with other characters, such as Kou, are marked by jealousy and rivalry.
Throughout the series, Raito undergoes a gradual development as he is forced to confront the damage caused by his past. The revelation of Cordelia's manipulation and the act of throwing her from the balcony serve as turning points that highlight his inner conflict between love, jealousy, and betrayal. His arc explores themes of obsession, emotional conflict, and the difficulty of distinguishing affection from control, leading him to slowly recognize the psychological wounds that drive his cruelty.
As a vampire, Raito possesses enhanced physical strength, speed, and agility. He is also associated with blood manipulation, which he uses to inflict both physical and emotional pain on his victims, and he is capable of distorting reality and temporarily controlling the minds of others. His fighting style is seductive but dangerous, reflecting his charming yet sinister nature. However, his reliance on emotional connections rooted in his past can cloud his judgment and interfere with his decision-making during critical moments, making him as unstable as he is formidable.
