Description
Narcisstes holds dual roles as the court scholar of the Kingdom of Granvania and the founding headmaster of the Granvania National Star God Academy. He directly instructs Itsuki and the Star Maidens as homeroom teacher of their Special Class, educating them on Granvania's history and the Impurity-combating technique known as Classmating. His scholarly duties involve deciphering ancient texts and labyrinth monitoring, tasks often performed in collaboration with Mirei.
He possesses orange hair and wears glasses. His distinctive attire includes a large white jacket featuring red buttons, red outlines, and black feather adornments. A prominent clock accessory hangs at his side, connected by chains that also extend to his hat; both hat and clock share a color scheme and incorporate a gold chain. This design deliberately echoes the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, particularly through the pocket watch and overall aesthetic.
His personality blends sophistication with a penchant for corny jokes, which amuse students like Mahiru. Respected as an educator, he shares a close bond with Mahiru in her role as class representative. Narcisstes demonstrates fierce loyalty to King Shangri-La, rigorously following orders—sometimes to extremes. This includes enforcing secrecy about the Ophiuchus labyrinth and threatening Mirei with treason accusations for noncompliance. To ensure Itsuki's participation in the sacrificial sealing ceremony, he imposes a Star Energy Taboo preventing disclosure of the sacrifice and leverages Mahiru's safety. His allegiance shifts decisively after Shangri-La sacrifices himself to protect Itsuki, leading Narcisstes to place faith in Itsuki's mission to destroy Chaos. Following the conflict's resolution, he locates the Gate of Light to send Itsuki home and seeks execution for his past actions. Pardoned, he commits to aiding Granvania's reconstruction.
Within the anime adaptation, his role is diminished. He primarily serves as an advisor to the king and offers limited assistance to Itsuki and Mahiru. A minor love interest subplot emerges during the search for the 13th Star Maiden but remains unresolved. The anime omits his manipulative tactics, presenting a less complex character.
Trivia notes reveal his name and design intentionally evoke narcissistic traits, with his appearance partially derived from an early concept for Itsuki. His character integrates scholarly authority with morally ambiguous decisions driven by loyalty, culminating in a quest for redemption through service to the kingdom.
