Description
Melvin Weins is a recurring supporting character across multiple Lord El-Melloi II franchise installments. A member of the Weins family, a Trambelio branch, he operates within the Clock Tower's Department of Creation. He possesses an extremely frail constitution due to an unspecified chronic illness, vomiting blood unpredictably and requiring daily magical hematopoietic medicine to survive. This condition prevented him from becoming a competitive magus despite talent sufficient for the Brand rank. After his father and others abandoned him, though his mother remained supportive, he discovered his unique aptitude: manipulating the Magic Circuits and Magic Crests of others. This ability restored his Clock Tower standing but also fostered a self-view as inherently flawed, leading him to test others more frequently.
His personality fixates on pursuing excitement as an observer, drawn to danger and intrigue, particularly concerning his self-proclaimed best friend, Waver Velvet (Lord El-Melloi II). He maintains this friendship partly by using Waver's original name, explaining his desire to prevent Waver's isolation once relinquishing the El-Melloi II title, acknowledging Waver's life beyond the Fourth Holy Grail War trauma. Melvin exhibits indifference to money, freely spending or loaning large sums for interesting outcomes, prioritizing his own amusement even if it endangers others. This is tempered by moments of genuine concern, like quiet anger upon seeing Waver severely injured and demanding the perpetrator's identity.
His primary ability is that of a Tuner (調律師, Chōritsu-shi), specializing in aligning Magic Crest wavelengths with hosts to temporarily enhance efficacy. His tools, crafted by his mother during the Renaissance, are valuable Mystic Codes noted for precision. He employs techniques like striking tuning forks for synchronization, demonstrated empowering allies Yvette L. Lehrman and Gray.
Key events define his history with Waver:
* Six months post-Fourth Holy Grail War, Melvin was deceived by magus Barzan into funding an Iraqi expedition to pillage Iskandar's tomb. Imprisoned with Waver, Melvin confirmed Kayneth El-Melloi Archibald's death and questioned Waver about the "return" on his loan. Waver, traumatized, stated it wasn't a story he could share. During their escape, Melvin remained behind due to frail health and desire for a "VIP seat" to the chaos, setting up a spell causing an explosion that disrupted the leyline, unleashed evil spirits, and killed Barzan's group. They escaped on a motorcycle, laughing. At the airport, Waver apologized for having neither money nor an interesting story to repay the loan, then requested another loan to purchase the El-Melloi classroom, feeling responsible for Kayneth's demise. Melvin agreed enthusiastically, insisting they become best friends and stating he would wait forever for repayment. This debt was later formalized with Waver's Magic Crest as collateral, and Melvin served as Tuner for restoring the El-Melloi family Crest.
* He later intruded on Reines El-Melloi Archisorte, outraged at not being informed of Waver's Rail Zeppelin auction invitation. He procured his own invitation and chartered a helicopter to intercept the train, stranded within a vampiric forest (a Child of Einnashe). The forest attacked his helicopter, causing a crash, but he survived and reached the train. Finding the injured Waver, he lightly admonished him before ominously asking Gray who caused his condition. He subsequently invited himself to assist Gray, Yvette, and Karabo Frampton reactivating the leyline to restore the train, using his Tuning ability to empower Yvette and Gray. He later attended the auction, witnessed the Mystic Eyes murders resolution expressing excitement, and aided in a protective spell alongside other magi.
* He acted as intermediary, delivering an invitation from Democratic Faction leader Inorai Valualeta Atroholm to Waver regarding the Grand Roll. Meeting Waver and Reines beforehand, he lacked delicacy questioning Waver's visibly poor condition. He revealed that while many in the Democratic Faction sought to crush Waver's faction, Inorai was fond of him, and even Melvin's mother had taken notice. He then admitted to "betrayal" by deliberately leading Waver into the meeting without warning about the presence of faction leader McDonell Trambelio Elrod.
* Around 2006, he appeared at an underground magus auction. Later, when Waver was challenged by Ziz to win Fem's Casa, Melvin was approached first by Ziz and paid Ziz's 1 million euro entry fee instead of Waver's. He relished the antagonist role against Waver, citing his worsening health as making the occasion special. He became Ziz's apprentice from the Wandering Sea, albeit only for half a day. After Ziz was shot with an Origin Bullet and declared dead, Melvin used an Age of Gods spell taught by Ziz to send him away for burial at sea.
