Before the conflict, he participated in air racing events on Side 4: Moore alongside Io Fleming and Claudia Peer, establishing a longstanding friendship. His primary role involves maintaining mobile suits and supporting squadron operations. Cornelius demonstrates consistent concern for Io Fleming's well-being, influenced by the psychological impact of the Battle of Moore and the loss of their homeland on Io. He also observes that Io doesn't inherently enjoy combat but feels most alive in life-threatening situations. He continues engineering duties there but also confronts Io when necessary, such as criticizing him for allowing the essential RX-78AL Atlas Gundam prototype to sustain extensive mission damage, emphasizing its strategic value against the South Seas Alliance. Cornelius exhibits a generally caring and diplomatic personality. He attempts to peacefully persuade retreating Zeon soldiers to surrender rather than fight, an action his allies later exploit to safely disable a booby trap and capture a key Zeon scientist.
