Description
Komasán is a yōkai in the appearance of a komainu, a traditional guardian lion‑dog statue. He originally stood watch over a rural shrine in the countryside, but after the shrine was dismantled he moved to the bustling Sakura New Town to start a new life. His rural origins are instantly recognizable in his speech: he often ends his sentences with “zura” and exclaims “monge” — a regional exclamation of surprise or wonder — whenever he encounters something new or impressive. He is naive about urban life and easily amazed by city conveniences, but he approaches each novel experience with earnest curiosity.
His personality is gentle, shy, and childlike. He is rarely aggressive and tends to be timid or even fearful in unfamiliar situations, yet his fundamental kindness and desire to connect with others drive him forward. He has a strong sense of loyalty, especially toward his younger brother Komajiro, and he tries hard to become a good role model for him despite his own insecurities. Komasán is also peaceable and avoids conflict when possible, though his protective instincts can surface if someone he cares about is threatened.
His primary motivation is to adapt to life in the city and to find a sense of belonging after losing his original home. He spends much of his time exploring the town, often becoming lost or misunderstanding common customs, but these misadventures become opportunities for personal growth. He has a particular fondness for soft‑serve ice cream, especially swirl‑shaped cones, and he is delighted by anything that reminds him of swirl patterns.
In the narrative of the anime, Komasán first appears when the main human character, Nate, and his yōkai companion Whisper discover him crying in a factory. From that point he becomes a recurring major character, frequently starring in his own dedicated segments. These segments follow his daily life in the city, his interactions with other yōkai and humans, and his ongoing attempts to understand the modern world. He also participates in group adventures and appears in several of the franchise’s theatrical films. Despite being a comic figure, his storylines often carry gentle life lessons about family, perseverance, and finding one’s place.
Key relationships include his younger brother Komajiro, who follows him to the city and, in contrast to Komasán, adapts quickly. Komasán also forms close bonds with Nate and Whisper, who help him navigate urban life. He interacts with many other yōkai, sometimes as a friend and sometimes as a reluctant participant in their schemes. In a future‑era storyline set thirty years later, a different incarnation of Komasán appears as a guardian yōkai of the Omamori tribe, tied to a family shrine.
Over the course of the series, Komasán shows gradual development. He becomes more confident in his ability to handle city challenges, learns from his mistakes, and deepens his understanding of human emotions and social conventions. His relationship with Komajiro evolves from simple awe of his brother to a more balanced mutual support.
As a yōkai, Komasán possesses fire‑based abilities. His signature technique involves summoning will‑o’‑the‑wisps, or hitodama, to attack his opponents. He can also inflict a burning inspiration that steadily drains an enemy’s health. In battle formations, his special skill, Alpha, boosts his spiritual power when it is placed next to a yōkai that has the Omega skill. In the video games he evolves into Shishikoma at a certain level, gaining stronger fire‑based attacks and a more imposing form. In the anime he occasionally displays enhanced power when the situation calls for it, but his combat role remains secondary to his character‑driven stories.
